TICK-BORNE DISEASES IN LIVESTOCK

Ticks and tick-borne diseases are some of the biggest challenges affecting livestock production in Zimbabwe. These diseases are spread by ticks when they suck blood from animals. Because ticks feed on different animals, they can pick up disease-causing organisms from infected animals and pass them on to healthy ones.

There are four major tick-borne diseases affecting livestock:

1. Theileriosis (January Disease / Zimbabwean Theileriosis)

- Theileriosis is a serious and fast-killing disease in cattle. It is caused by a parasite called Theileria parva, which attacks white blood cells and weakens the animal’s immune system. The disease is spread by brown ear ticks (Rhipicephalus species).

Signs of Theileriosis include:

- Tearing eyes
- Swelling of lymph nodes (mbandabvu), especially under the ears and in front of the shoulder
- Loss of appetite and reduced grazing
- High fever (up to 41°C)
- Dragging of hind legs
- Frothy nasal discharge (late stage)
- Difficulty breathing
- Bloody diarrhoea (in some cases)
- Lying down and eventual death

2. Babesiosis (Red Water)

- Babesiosis is caused by a parasite called Babesia bigemina, which destroys red blood cells and causes anaemia. It is spread by blue ticks (Boophilus species).
- Signs of Red Water include:

- Dark red or coke-coloured urine
- Fever (dry nose)
- Pale gums due to anaemia
- Poor appetite
- Weakness
- Diarrhoea
- Reluctance to move
- Abortion
- Yellowing of gums or v***a (jaundice) in advanced cases

3. Anaplasmosis (Gall Sickness)

- Gall sickness is caused by bacteria called Anaplasma marginale, which infect red blood cells and causes anaemia. It is mainly spread by blue ticks. It can also spread through biting flies (such as stable flies, horse flies, and tsetse flies) and contaminated needles or instruments.
- Signs of Gall Sickness include:

- Fever (may disappear in later stages)
- Depression
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Jaundice
- Reduced rumen movement
- Constipation

4. Ehrlichiosis (Heartwater)

- Heartwater affects ruminants and is caused by bacteria called Ehrlichia ruminantium, which attacks blood vessels. The disease can appear suddenly and may cause rapid death.

Signs of Heartwater include:

- Sudden death (in severe cases)High fever
- Loss of appetite
- Depression
- Breathing problems

Nervous signs such as:

- Excessive chewing movements
- Poor coordination
- Walking in circles
- Pedalling movements
- High-stepping walking style
- Convulsions

PREVENTION

- The best way to prevent tick-borne diseases is regular and effective dipping of cattle.

If you suspect any of these diseases, visit your nearest Fivet Branch for advice and support from our trained technical staff!
