Befriending your Nervous System
While we may think our brains are in charge, the heart of our daily experience and the way we navigate the world begins in our bodies with the Autonomic Nervous System.
This is the place where the stories emerge about who we are and how the world works, what we do and how we feel.
Our Autonomic Nervous System is made up of the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems with the vagus nerves providing the primary pathways for the parasympathetic system through the Dorsal and and Ventral branches.
🟩 Ventral - connected and able to communicate effectiveyl, meeting demands, engage with life, go with the flow.
🟧 Sympathetic:
REGULATED- energy to move, regulates heart & breath rythems
SURVIVAL - chaotic, angry, anxious, stressed, mobilized to attack, frantic, overwhelmed
🟥 Dorsal:
REGULATED - calm, relaxed, easy digestion, easy to sleep & be intimate
SURVIVAL - shutdown, disconnect, drained, exhausted, hopeless, disassociated, going through motions without feeling
When working with the nervous system we want to create the awareness and ability to move flexibly between the states, this is a sign of well-being and resilience. It is when we get caught in dysregulation (constant survival activation), unable to find our way back to regulation that we feel distressed.
❓ Question for you -
❓ Do you know what you already do to help regulate yourself?
