What is a bone density Scan?

Bone density scanning is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. A bone mineral density (BMD) test measures calcium and other minerals in bone. Bones containing more minerals are denser, so they tend to be stronger and less likely to break. Bones can become less dense as we age or if we develop certain medical conditions.

Who qualifies for bone densitometry?

The International Society for Clinical Densitometry recommends measurement of BMD (DEXA of the hip and spine) in:
• All women age 65 years and older and men age 70 years and older regardless of risk factors.
• Postmenopausal women and men age 50 to 70 years when risk factors are present.

Bone density is an important indicator of how likely bones are to break. It's also valuable in identifying osteopenia and osteoporosis and assessing the effectiveness of treatments that aim to prevent bone loss.
