The National Tree Planting Day commemoration at Kutama Mission carried the same spirit of purpose, unity and environmental stewardship that has defined the 16th Edition of the FOTE Walkathon from Harare to Murombedzi. As we continue advancing our mission to plant 500 million trees across Zimbabwe, the unveiling of the Central Tree Nursery at Kutama stands as a powerful milestone in strengthening the nation’s reforestation efforts and nurturing a greener tomorrow.

The ceremony was graced by Guest of Honour the Ambassador of Algeria, H.E. Mohamed Seoudi, representing the Dean of Ambabssadors, H. E. James Musoni of Rwanda. The ceremony also featured symbolic tree-planting by key dignitaries, such as the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland West, Honourable Marian Chombo, who's presence reaffirmed Government’s commitment to sustainable environmental management. Inspiring remarks were delivered by The Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Honourable Evelyn Ndlovu and FOTE Chairman Onismas Karakadzai, each underscoring the importance of collective responsibility.

Nature itself endorsed the day’s mission, rain began to fall after the ceremony, blessing the newly planted trees and sealing the moment with promise. From every step walked to every tree planted, yesterday's commemoration strengthened the message that protecting our environment is not just a duty, but a shared legacy we build together.

The 16th Edition of the FOTE Walkathon from Harare to Murombedzi came to a triumphant close yesterday, marked by fulfilment, celebration, and an unbreakable spirit carried through every kilometre.

From the very start, the final leg was filled with excitement and emotion as participants prepared to complete an unforgettable three-day adventure. Though the shortest stretch—32km from the Moleli High School turn-off to Murombedzi Growth Point—it was undoubtedly one of the most meaningful. Walkers moved with renewed energy, cheered on by communities along the way and driven by the anticipation of crossing the finish line together.

Murombedzi Growth Point erupted into colour and celebration as the walkers arrived. The community event came alive with music, vibrant performances, and the uplifting sounds of the Mutendi High School Brass Band, which once again set a festive tone. Families, local residents, and participants gathered to enjoy games, interactive activities, and giveaways, transforming the Growth Point into a lively carnival. It was a powerful reminder of how the Walkathon brings people together in purpose, hope, and shared joy.

As the sun set, the spirit of achievement carried into the evening. On the journey back to the Kutama Mission campsite, the heavens opened with rain—blessing three days of perfect walking weather and sanctifying every step taken across approximately 110 kilometres through Harare Metropolitan, Chegutu, and Zvimba District.

Back at the campsite, a heartfelt certification ceremony marked the emotional peak of the event. Participants proudly received certificates and medals, lasting symbols of endurance, unity, and dedication to the mission of planting 500 million trees across Zimbabwe.

This morning, participants, organisers, and community members will gather at Kutama Mission for a special tree-planting ceremony, further cementing the Walkathon’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable growth.

DAY 1: Through Zimbabwe’s sweltering summer heat the kind that promises rain beyond the horizon, participants conquered the 40km stretch from Harare to Norton with unshakeable determination yesterday. They completed the first leg of the 16th Edition of the FOTE Walkathon from Harare to Murombedzi.

The opening day is always a test of will, a blend of adrenaline, excitement, and the reality of the long road ahead. At one point, a participant joked that he finally understood why the Israelites were angry with Moses, only for another to reply with a laugh, “But they eventually reached the promised land!”

As fatigue crept in and the kilometres grew heavier, the walkers drew strength from each other. They pushed one another forward with spirited shouts, playful banter, and heartfelt reminders of their purpose. There were voices rising in familiar Shona and Ndebele war cries, lifting tired legs and weary spirits alike. By the end of the day, participants had not only completed a demanding journey of distance, but had showcased unwavering perseverance.

Their focus now shifts firmly to the mission ahead: planting trees in Murombedzi, all in support of the greater goal of greening Zimbabwe with 500 million trees.
