Headphones and earphones are a great piece of technology that make it possible for you to enjoy music anywhere you go in high quality. They should however be used with great care and caution! Studies show that hearing loss is on the rise in youngsters due to excessive noise exposure from the use of headphones/earphones. Other conditions such as Tinnitus (Noises in the ear), Hyperacusis (an increased sensitivity to normal environmental sounds) and Ear infections are also not uncommon.

Try not to share headphones/earphones with other users and sanitize these gadgets regularly to prevent a buildup of bacteria, sweat and shed skin. If headphones have sponge covers change them once a month.
Keep the volume low, at or less than 60% and also limit the amount of time you spend with earbuds in your ears to 60 minutes.

Winter is upon us!
Here are some of the tips to follow to ensure that you stay healthy throughout the winter season.
1. Get plenty of sleep
We need 7-8 hours of sleep per night. When we are not getting enough sleep, our bodies become vulnerable to illness. Sleep is fuel!
2. Exercise regularly
When you exercise and get your blood pumping, immune cells circulate through your body more quickly helping them seek and destroy infections.
3. Eat plenty of fruits
Fruits which contain Vitamin C will boost your immune system and help you fight off common colds and flu.
4. Stay hydrated
We need as much fluids in winter as we do in summer for our bodies to function optimally.
5. Keep warm.
Cold weather can affect your body's ability to fight off viruses and infections.

We join Africa and the rest of the world in commemorating Africa Day. The theme this year is "Healthy Lifestyle Prolongs Life”. Part of a healthy lifestyle includes a healthy balanced diet.
Most African foods are healthier than foods in other parts of the world. This is because African foods are richer in dietary fibre (which helps to prevents heart diseases) and African foods are generally lower in added sugar, fat and sodium.
Many Africans shift from these indigenous African foods to other diets which are more processed and higher in sugar, fats and sodium. This leads to a dramatic rise in the number of people who are overweight.
We continue to encourage people to monitor what they eat, how they eat and how much they eat!

While the use of social media has positively influenced our communication in general, it can also have some harmful effects if excessively used. There have been many studies that have concluded that social media addiction is real. This happens when the use of social media platforms begins to take over your life and having a negative effect on your ‘real life’ and relationships. This can lead to disruptions in your physical and mental health, sleeping patterns, weight and levels of exercise and notably in school work.

Find other hobbies to do like taking walks, exercising, reading hard copy books and newspapers etc, so that you can take a break from social media sometimes if you feel that you maybe under danger of addiction. If you are hanging out with friends, or in the company of family at home, try by all means to keep your phone away and interact the 'natural' way. Its good for your physical, social and mental health.

Eating homemade foods is usually much healthier than eating at a restaurant or buying processed foods from the market.
Many commercially prepared foods are high in fat, salt, and sugar.
When we prepare our own food, we know exactly which ingredients and how much of each are going into our food.
If you have to eat out, try to go for healthy options, fruits and vegetables are usually a good choice.
