Oh my goodness, it's been freezing the last few weeks. We're definitely in the deep, dark depths of an Adelaide winter! 🥶

Unfortunately, the winter months can exacerbate circulation issues in the lower limbs for many. Cold weather may constrict blood vessels, leading to a variety of uncomfortable and sometimes severe foot conditions. 👣

Here’s a fun one—did you know the skin on the soles of your feet is the thickest anywhere on your body? It can be up to 4mm thick! That’s because it’s built to cope with all the walking, running, and standing we do every day. 💪🏽

But just because it’s thicker doesn’t mean it’s invincible. The skin on your feet needs regular care to stay healthy and avoid things like cracks, calluses, or infections. 👣

So it’s worth giving your feet a bit of love—wash and dry them properly, moisturise regularly, and keep an eye on any changes. And if anything’s bothering you, we’re always here to help at Blackwood Podiatry 💙

Today is National Close the Gap Day. At Blackwood Podiatry, we believe health equality is a fundamental right for all. 👣

Today, we want to highlight the ongoing disparities in health and social outcomes for Indigenous Australians and the urgent need for change.

The latest Productivity Commission report is sobering—only four out of 19 targets are on track. Last year, five targets were on track, but the goal of increasing the rate of babies born at a healthy weight will likely be unmet. This is a concerning step backwards.

Here are some of the confronting statistics:

➡️ Indigenous Australians have a life expectancy of around 8-10 years lower than non-Indigenous Australians.

➡️ Infant mortality rates for Indigenous babies are around double those of non-Indigenous babies.

➡️ Indigenous Australians experience higher rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory conditions.

➡️ Indigenous Australians are more likely to suffer from mental health issues, with rates of psychological distress being significantly higher than non-Indigenous Australians.

➡️ Indigenous Australians are overrepresented in the prison population, with the latest data showing a 15 per cent spike in imprisonment of Indigenous adults in just one year between 2023 and 2024.

➡️ Indigenous Australians are more likely to experience homelessness compared to non-Indigenous Australians.

These statistics are a stark reminder that more action is needed. Closing the gap requires commitment, systemic change, and a collective effort.
