Birth Debriefing sessions are now available with Birthing Doula Shelly
People often rush to ask a new mum how her baby is.
But it's time we all pay more attention to the new parents.
As a birthworker, birth trauma and its long-lasting impacts are always front of mind.
But Birth Trauma Awareness Week is an opportunity to publicly shine the spotlight on what is an important, widespread and preventable issue.
The latest statistics suggest at least one in three mothers experience a traumatic birth, and at least 15 per cent of new parents (including fathers and non-birthing partners) will suffer post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the postpartum period as a result of birth trauma.
We know birth itself is not inherently traumatic for most people, but the behaviour and actions of care providers in the birth space, non-consensual practices, medical interventions, injuries and lack of birth education and preparation are leading causes of birth trauma.
As a result of these experiences, we see large numbers of people begin their parenting journey with unresolved trauma, unanswered questions, a sense of overwhelm and confusion, and no idea where to turn for help.
To mark Birth Trauma Awareness Week, I am today launching a new dedicated Birth Debriefing offering, which is a private session for parents who have experienced birth trauma, or anyone who would simply like support and space holding to reflect on, piece together or bring closure after birth or loss. This offering is for you whether you've had a hospital birth, homebirth or free birth. You are welcome to come alone, or with a birth partner, and sessions are available in person at the Cairns Birth Collective or online.
