Yesterday we had the opportunity to welcome Hon Minister Amanda Camm MP, along with Minister Bree James - Barron River MP and Bernadette Harvey, Deputy Director-General (Commissioning) to Wuchopperen.

Their visit coincided with the Cape York Mayors (TIICA) Forum and gave us the chance to have some really focused conversations around key issues impacting our community. These included changes to the NDIS, the Thriving Kids Strategy, family and domestic violence, and the growing number of children in out-of-home care.

In a short but productive 30 minutes, we were able to share insights from the frontline, talk through practical challenges, and put forward ideas and solutions to support better outcomes for our families and children.

What a deadly day at Futures of Gimuy – Youth Week 2026.
It was powerful to see so many young people come together, connect and just enjoy being part of community. The energy across the day was strong, with laughter, movement and a real sense of belonging from start to finish.

There was plenty happening, from tug of war and volleyball to basketball, cast net competitions and more. It was great to see young people getting involved, backing each other and stepping into the day with confidence.

At Wuchopperen, our young people are everything. They are our future leaders, our storytellers, our culture holders and the next generation who will carry community forward. When young people feel strong in who they are, connected to culture, family and community, and supported to work through life’s challenges, we see stronger outcomes not just for individuals, but for whole families and future generations.

That is why our youth programs focus on walking alongside young people, not telling them what to do. Creating spaces where they can talk things through, build confidence, stay connected to culture and have a say in their own lives is what makes the difference. Support looks different for everyone, and we take the time to work out what works for each young person.

We were proud to be part of the day and to support the community through our Carnival Kitchen. Nothing brings people together like a good feed and a shared space.

A big thank you to the PCYC team, Our Future Mentors Harbrow Mentoring Australia, Bori Muy, Aspire to be Deadly, RISE, John Moriarty Community, School Savvy FNQ, Our Cultural Conversations, Little Lifesavers, Deadly Choices, Bumma Bippera 987fm Radio, Playtime Disco DJ, PCYC Mareeba, PCYC Yarrabah and Cairns First Aid. Your support, energy and commitment helped create a space where young people could connect, feel supported and be part of something positive.

Thank you as well to Cairns Regional Council for providing the space.

Most importantly, thank you to the young people. You showed up, got involved and made the day what it was.

This is what strong community looks like. Young people connected, supported and growing strong.

Wuchopperen is proud to have Nichole Levers, Manager Children and Family Services, contributing as part of the organising committee for the Cairns Early Years Conference, 21–22 May 2026.

The early years are where everything starts. It is where children build their sense of safety, connection and belonging, and where families are supported to grow strong.

This conference brings together people working across health, education and community services, creating space to learn from each other and strengthen how we walk alongside families in those early years.

Behind the scenes, the Early Years Committee has been meeting regularly, giving their time, knowledge and care alongside their everyday roles. It speaks to a shared commitment across the sector to do better, together, for children and families.

At Wuchopperen, this work matters. It reflects our focus on strong beginnings, strong families and strong communities.

Celebrating strong mums, strong families and the journey into motherhood.

Our Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program (ANFPP), also known as the First Time Mums Program, supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mums from pregnancy through to their child’s early years. Through regular home visits, guidance and support, the program helps mums build confidence, strengthen connection with their baby, and create healthy, positive futures for their families.

Afton and Tilly joined the program in 2024, each beginning their journey as first-time mums. After their bubbas were born, they met at a client gathering, formed a connection, and have supported each other along the way.

Recently, we had the privilege of celebrating their graduation together. A shared milestone filled with proud moments, tears of happiness and of course, cake.

Their home visiting team, Mel and Gail, have walked alongside them throughout their journey. From those early days through to now, building strong relationships not just within the program, but beyond it.

This is what ANFPP is all about. Walking alongside families, building confidence, ANFPP connection and strong foundations for the next generation.

Last Wednesday, Kunjur Men’s Health Collective and Wuchopperen Health Service brought men together for a workshop at Nintiringanyi Cultural Training Centre. It was a strong space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to share their stories about health, what keeps them strong, and what needs to be prioritised at the Men’s Health Summit.

Men spoke with honesty about shame, loss, responsibility, safe spaces, cultural health and more. Every story shared helps guide the Men’s Health Summit on 22–23 May at Dejarlis Function Centre, Cairns Showgrounds.

Big thank you to Kunjur Men’s Health Collective for walking with us, and to Nintiringanyi Cultural Training Centre for hosting us.

And congratulations to Wesley, who took home a deadly BCF fishing package.
