What a deadly day at Futures of Gimuy – Youth Week 2026.
It was powerful to see so many young people come together, connect and just enjoy being part of community. The energy across the day was strong, with laughter, movement and a real sense of belonging from start to finish.
There was plenty happening, from tug of war and volleyball to basketball, cast net competitions and more. It was great to see young people getting involved, backing each other and stepping into the day with confidence.
At Wuchopperen, our young people are everything. They are our future leaders, our storytellers, our culture holders and the next generation who will carry community forward. When young people feel strong in who they are, connected to culture, family and community, and supported to work through life’s challenges, we see stronger outcomes not just for individuals, but for whole families and future generations.
That is why our youth programs focus on walking alongside young people, not telling them what to do. Creating spaces where they can talk things through, build confidence, stay connected to culture and have a say in their own lives is what makes the difference. Support looks different for everyone, and we take the time to work out what works for each young person.
We were proud to be part of the day and to support the community through our Carnival Kitchen. Nothing brings people together like a good feed and a shared space.
A big thank you to the PCYC team, Our Future Mentors Harbrow Mentoring Australia, Bori Muy, Aspire to be Deadly, RISE, John Moriarty Community, School Savvy FNQ, Our Cultural Conversations, Little Lifesavers, Deadly Choices, Bumma Bippera 987fm Radio, Playtime Disco DJ, PCYC Mareeba, PCYC Yarrabah and Cairns First Aid. Your support, energy and commitment helped create a space where young people could connect, feel supported and be part of something positive.
Thank you as well to Cairns Regional Council for providing the space.
Most importantly, thank you to the young people. You showed up, got involved and made the day what it was.
This is what strong community looks like. Young people connected, supported and growing strong.
