I often say to my families, I don’t meet you at your best, I meet you in your mess. Poetic justice, you’re meeting me in my mess today.

It’s been an exceptionally busy start to the year —
17 farewells in just three weeks.

That’s 17 families trusting me to walk beside them through some of their hardest days. I hold a lot of gratitude for that trust, and a lot of care for every story shared.

I also want to acknowledge the people I work alongside — funeral directors, directors assistants florists, — good humans doing this role with grace, empathy, and heart. Sometimes we hold each other up.

And to the people in my life who thrive on order and neat desks… my apologies.
Sometimes chaos is just how I roll.

Messy desk, car and bun. Heart is full. And if you spotted that glass of wine… the mess surely can’t be that bad. 😉

I watched Goodbye June last night and cried… ugly crying, snot and all. 😭

If you work anywhere near death, dying, or supporting families — this one is worth watching.

It’s not glossy or romanticised. It’s messy. Awkward. Tender. Hard.
Family dynamics under pressure, informed choice, the day-to-day reality of end of life — all the stuff that actually shows up, but doesn’t always get talked about.

It felt uncomfortably familiar in the best possible way.
A reminder of why these conversations matter, why choice matters, and why compassion has to come first.

Highly recommend.
With tissues. 🤍

Earlier this week, we farewelled Herb in one of the most peaceful places I know — Yungaburra Cemetery 🤍
Surrounded by trees, birdsong, and nature — it felt like the perfect resting place for a man who loved the outdoors and cared so deeply for the world around him.

Herb’s service was simple, family-led, and full of small, meaningful details.
Country music playing as he was brought to rest.
Stories shared by his daughters.
Grandchildren as proud pallbearers, everyone included, just as Herb would have wanted.

With heartfelt thanks to Sallie from Community Funerals for her gentle guidance and care — always calm, kind, and family-focused.

Guests were invited to farewell Herb with a handful of earth — and a rusty nail or two.
A quiet nod to the builder he was, and the life he lived.

A beautiful reminder that it’s often the simplest, most personal touches that make a farewell truly meaningful.

Some services stay with you — for a variety of reasons, this one has for me because of the woman at the heart of it and her beautiful family.

Lola was incredible in her own quiet way, full of life, warmth, and that unmistakeable spark— god help you to be on the receiving end of “the look”, the one that could say everything without a single word.

Her farewell was beautiful, heartfelt, and deeply reflective of who she was, with a very special Eulogy delivered by her Grandchildren. It’s a lot to fill 9 decades of life, her grandchildren pieced together an amazing story.

To receive such a thoughtful thank you card from her family afterwards meant more than I can say.
It was an honour to help tell Lola’s story and to stand with those who loved her so dearly.

I won’t stop saying the words, this “work” is always a privilege. 🤍

Lola was lovingly cared for by the compassionate and professional Blake 🫶🏼

There’s been a lot to take in today.
What’s happened in Sydney is heartbreaking — and the images being shared are confronting, frightening and sadly intoxicating.

It’s okay to look away.
To stop scrolling.
To turn off the TV.
To activate do not disturb for your heart and your mind.

That doesn’t mean you don’t care.

This isn’t about dismissing what’s happened, or avoiding hard conversations, opinions, beliefs or grief.
It’s about preserving our capacity — to stay well, to care meaningfully, and to protect the minds of those we love, especially children.

We don’t need to absorb every graphic detail to feel compassion.
Be mindful of what you’re consuming, and be gentle with your nervous system.

Hold space where you can.
And show kindness — to others and yourself.

Remembrance Day
At 11 o’clock, we pause — not just in silence, but in gratitude.
For the lives given, the families forever changed, and the stories that still filter through generations.

May we honour them not only today, but in the way we choose to live with kindness and compassion.
Lest we forget. ❤️

🪦Day of the Dead — Ceremony of Love & Remembrance 🍃

This weekend I’m heading to Mullumbimby for Day of the Dead — a community gathering led by the incredible Zenith Virago.

I’ve followed Zenith’s work for a long time, and I can’t wait to experience the way she holds space for love, loss, and ritual in such a beautifully human way. I feel like there’s so much I’ll learn just by being there — from the way remembrance is woven into ceremony, to how community comes together to honour those we’ve loved and lost.

I’m really looking forward to soaking it all in — the music, the meaning, and the gentle reminder that grief and love are two sides of the same coin. And also to get some inspiration for my own upcoming event with Tania of White Lady Funerals.

🕯 Sunday 9 November | 3–6pm | Heritage Park, Mullumbimby
A free community event — everyone welcome.

Is there still a place for celebrants at funerals?

It’s a fair question.
With the rise of AI and the cost of living climbing, you might wonder — why hire a celebrant at all?

The truth is, a funeral isn’t just a task to tick off.
It’s a moment to stop… to feel… to let grief have a place to land.
It’s about connection, not completion.

Rituals and ceremonies have always existed for a reason — they give shape to what we can’t quite put into words. They help us pause and process, rather than rush through the motions.

And that’s where a celebrant comes in.
Not just to read a script — but to listen, to translate a life into words that feel real.
To bring comfort, meaning, and a steady voice when everything else feels uncertain.

AI can write, sure.
But it can’t hold space.
It can’t catch someone’s eye and remind them they’re not alone.

So yes, I think there’s still a place for celebrants.
Maybe now, more than ever.

Because when it comes to love, loss, and remembering — we still need humans to help make sense of it all.
Would love your insight on this…

✨Community gold right here.
I popped into the COUCH Cancer Hub NQ community day today and honestly… what an incredible space.
It’s welcoming, calm, and full of heart — just like the people who run it.

The work they do makes such a difference for locals navigating cancer — offering connection, comfort, and practical support when it’s needed most. And the best part? It’s completely funded by donations from generous local businesses and individuals.

It reminded me that community care doesn’t just happen — it’s created, one act of kindness at a time. 💛

If you haven’t been out there yet, go see for yourself. It’s truly something special.

👣This October is Mental Health month and I’m putting one foot forward for the Black Dog Institute.

I’ll be clocking up the steps to raise awareness (and some much-needed funds) for mental health — because let’s be honest, it’s something that touches all of us in some way.

Every step is for the people I love, the families I support, and for anyone who’s ever had to fight their way through the tough days. 💛

If you’d like to cheer me on (or throw a few dollars toward the cause), here’s the link to my page Support my 100km challenge for mental health research!
Together, we can help create better mental health for all. I’d love your support! Big or small, it all makes a difference.

Let’s do this — one step, one foot, one day at a time. 🙌 🚶‍♀️🐾
