I’m pregnant! 🤰

Now what?😳

If you don’t already have a great GP, now’s the time to hunt one down! They can help you confirm a viable pregnancy by providing referrals for bloods and a dating scan. (6-10 weeks)

Around this time, you can start to think about what your pregnancy care plan may look like. That could be:
🤰Shared care with your GP & the hospital
🤰MGP (Midwifery Group Practice) within the hospital. You can self refer, but do this early as spaces get snapped up quickly
🤰Private midwife
🤰Private Obstetrician. While they don’t deliver at the Cairns Hospital, some offer an early pregnancy care model

The same GP can then talk you through the next step, whether you’d like to opt for the Nuchal Transluceny scan + blood test or the NIPT test. Both screen for genetic abnormalities, however, the NIPT is a more comprehensive screening test and is a bit pricier.
Nipt is a blood test offered from 10 weeks. The NT scan and blood test should be done 11-14 weeks.

((NB: A lot of my Cairns clients have had a hard time booking their NT scan during the appropriate time window, so the sooner you have your referral, the sooner you can book with your preferred provider.))

You’ll also need a referral for your Morphology scan. Time window: 18-22 weeks.

Blood testing for Gestational Diabetes (GD) typically occurs during the 24-28 week window. (Also need referral)

If all is well with you and babe, then it’s just a waiting game till you meet your honey.

Feel free to comment your favourite care providers and share with other mums just starting their journey. Pregnancy isn’t a linear experience and no two pregnancies will be exactly the same.

You might glow, you might suffer from HG, you might have anxiety about issues identified with your babe. I just hope you don’t forget to take care of yourself, physically and mentally. Including, utilising your support network, or creating one from the great resources available.
