Here’s 3 things that might help if you’ve been told you have low progesterone:
1️⃣ Make sure you’re ovulating! This is always the first thing to check, as ovulation is how we make progesterone.
2️⃣ Get lots of good quality sleep 😴 Poor sleep is strongly associated with low progesterone
3️⃣ Vitamin C - essential for progesterone production and research shows that women who take vitamin C supplements have higher progesterone levels. A simple way to help your progesterone, especially where stress is a factor!
Hope this is helpful - let me know if you have questions 😊

FERTILITY SUPPLEMENTS

This is a question I get all the time! How do I know what supplements I should take?
If you’ve wondered about this, these are the three things to consider before buying a supplement for fertility:
1. What form js the nutrient in? Will it be well-absorbed or will you just p*e it out? Does your body have to work hard to convert it to an active form or will it work straight away? 2. What dose do you need? Most nutrients need to be taken at specific doses for specific actions - there’s no point taking a low dose that does nothing, you’ll just be wasting your money.
3. The biggest question, should really be number 1! Do you actually need it? What will it do for you and how will you know it’s working?

These are the steps I go through when prescribing supplements, and while there’s some nutrients I will have most (if not all) of my TTC patients on, there are definitely some that need to be carefully considered. So if you’d rather not pay for a bunch of supplements that aren’t right for you, ask yourself these questions first and make an informed decision!
Got questions about your supplements? Ask me in the comments or DM me.

FERTILITY CHALLENGES
🍃 This week I’ve seen a full spectrum of different fertility challenges in clinic. The top 3 things I am seeing at the moment (can you relate?):

1. Irregular or absent ovulation - without ovulation, there’s no chance of (natural) conception so this is one I see often. Once we figure out the cause, it is often fixable - so don’t feel like IVF is your only hope!

2. Age - unfortunate but true, it definitely takes longer (on average) to conceive the older you are. But don’t forget, that’s on average - I have plenty of ‘older’ patients who conceive quickly (especially after good preconception preparation) and sadly, plenty of young women who struggle. Your journey is your own - always make sure you know what’s going on in your unique situation, age is never the whole picture.

3. S***m health - yep, at the moment it’s one of my top 3. So many couples come to me after many months (or years) of trying, without ever having had a semen analysis. Declining s***m quality & quantity is a growing issue affecting almost half of all couples with fertility struggles (and having fathered a child in the past is no guarantee of good current s***m health!)

🍃 So I’m curious - so you fall into one of these categories? If not, do you know what’s causing your fertility struggles, or are you currently in the ‘unexplained’ group? I’ll talk a bit more about unexplained infertility later this week so if you have questions, post them below or message me and I’ll aim to address them!

~ Is your oestrogen too high? ~

Oestrogen is a super-important hormone for the female reproductive system - but just like goldilocks, we need levels to be ‘just right’ to feel our best.

So, what happens if it’s too high? The main things that make me think ‘high estrogen’ are symptoms like:
🔸heavy, painful periods
🔸PMS
🔸fibroids
🔸breast swelling & tenderness
🔸premenstrual mood swings (esp if you get angry / irritable)
🔸constipation
🔸bloating & fluid retention
🔸irregular cycles
🔸pre-menstrual spotting

Can high estrogen affect fertility: absolutely. The biggest issue I see here is high estrogen levels impacting endometrial health, which can increase risk of implantation failure.

So what can you do? First, we figure out why your estrogen is high - sometimes it’s a ‘relative’ excess, meaning it’s high in relation to progesterone, in which case we work on improving progesterone; but if it’s a true estrogen excess, we work on the cause.
(Pro tip: most women have more than one contributing factor!)
Once we address the underlying cause, hormone levels generally normalise and you feel like a new woman.

In a nutshell, fertility really is about good health - when our bodies are healthy and vital, then our cells, organs and body systems function optimally - and naturopaths are really good at helping your body to function optimally! So when your reproductive system is healthy and vital, it ‘does its thing’ by trying to get you pregnant each month 🤰
~
What does a healthy female reproductive system look like?

✅ regular cycles (whatever length is usual for you, ideally between 26-32 days)
✅ minimal cramping or pain with bleeds
✅ minimal pre-menstrual symptoms
✅ no spotting or pain around ovulation, or in the days leading up to your period
✅ bright red blood with no large clots or flooding, lasting 3-5 days 🩸
~
As a fertility naturopath, the first thing I’ll do is look at your cycles to see what they can tell us. If your pattern differs from that described above, don’t stress - this is where all the diet, lifestyle and magic herbal medicine come in to correct imbalances (including PCOS, endometriosis, irregular or absent cycles) contributing to your hormonal symptoms.
~
We’ll also look at anything that’s potentially impeding your ability to conceive, and aim to correct this; and we’ll talk about all the research that tells us what HELPS you to conceive, and make sure we’re adding that in where necessary 👍
~
And the best part of the process: you’ll finally feel like you understand your body, your cycles and your hormones, and feel empowered to continue on your fertility journey in the knowledge that you’re as healthy and vital as possible 🙌
~
If this is the year you’re planning to start or grow your family, I’d love to hear from you - message me or comment below to talk about how we can work together to get your body baby-ready! 🎉

~Welcome to Fertility Simplified~

Hi there! I’m Leesa, women’s health & fertility naturopath and founder of Fertility Simplified. I’m so excited to welcome you to the Fertility Simplified community - a place for you to feel heard and supported, and to explore all the amazing things you can do for your own fertility.
🙋‍♀️ Like you, I’ve had my own fertility struggles - it took me nearly 5 years (hindered by a missed diagnosis) to conceive my daughter, and even though 10 years have passed, I still remember that feeling of hopelessness that set in with every month that went by waiting for those two magic lines.
💜 But during that journey I also learned the value of good health - I learned so much about hormones, diet, lifestyle and environmental toxins, and how all of these come together to form our own unique picture of health (and, therefore, fertility).
🤝 I learned the value of gathering an amazing team of healthcare practitioners around me, and combining the best of natural medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. And I learned that finding support you can trust is truly a game-changer.
🌟 So, that’s what I’d like to be for you - support that you can trust, information you can rely on, and a community of women all striving towards the same goal - to optimise their health and their fertility, get their bodies baby-ready, and hopefully get that positive pregnancy test and healthy baby they’ve longed for.
Thanks for being here!
