Earlier this month Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) welcomed WA Professor Obstetrics and Gynaecology, John Newnham, to speak to staff about Every Week Counts, an initiative aimed at reducing preterm births across Australia.

Already making significant progress introducing an induction of labour booking form for staff, progesterone take-home packs, as well as smoking cessation and ni****ne replacement therapy, the FSH Every Week Counts working group have achieved a six per cent reduction in preterm and early term births 👏

Thanks for having us Fiona Stanley Hospital!

The latest in our Every Week Counts Collaborative Outreach Roadshow took place today at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH).

Alliance Chair, Professor John Newnham, joined hospital executive and FSH’s Every Week Counts team, to outline the hospital's involvement in the national program to safely reduce rates of preterm and early term birth.

Progress made at FSH and new initiatives underway to provide culturally safe preterm birth prevention for First Nations women and families were among the hot topics discussed in preparation for our upcoming Adelaide Learning Session in just a couple of weeks.

Eight Western Australian hospitals and health services are among the 40 maternity hospitals across the country that are working together as part of Round 2 of our national program which is working to improve pregnancy outcomes for women across the country.

The Commonwealth Government-funded Every Week Counts Australian Preterm and Early Term Birth Prevention Program is a collaboration between the Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance, Women's Healthcare Australasia, and Institute for Healthcare Improvement - IHI.

An Australian-first study is underway at Fiona Stanley Hospital seeking to better support Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses with single-room ICU layouts 👩‍⚕️

With single-room layouts becoming more common in ICUs around the world due to a range of patient benefits, including enhanced privacy and lower infection rates, this study focuses on the experiences of ICU nurses in making this transition to a new model of care.

Principal Investigator and ICU Acting Clinical Nurse Paige Gleason said, “by better understanding ICU nurses’ experience of working in single-room adult ICUs, we can identify the challenges and supports required.

In our next ‘We are SMHS’ segment, this special edition features Peel Health Campus’ resident power couple, Sue and Troy Sims! 👫

Recently celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, this duo brings the same sense of partnership to their work as they do to their life together.

Meeting when they were 17 years old at a hairdressing salon, Troy was Sue’s apprentice, and they’ve worked side-by-side ever since. Soon married, they decided to run their own salon out of their home for 12 years whilst raising six boys 💙

When COVID hit they made the decision to close the salon and that’s when they joined the Peel Health Campus family.

Working in Patient Support Services, Sue keeps patient rooms clean, safe and welcoming. She loves moving around the hospital, meeting new people and creating a calm space for patients when they need it most.

And there’s Troy – the hospital’s handyman, working on anything and everything from fixing equipment, painting, delivering furniture, and much more!

Finding joy in helping patients feel comfortable and supporting clinicians behind the scenes, the pair are a true team in life and at work, bringing warmth to the Peel Health Campus community.

Rockingham General Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) team took training to the next level recently with a custom-built medical escape room 🧐

Staff were thrown into a high‑pressure fictional outbreak scenario, managing deteriorating patients, urgent procedures and competing priorities - just like a real ED shift, minus the risk 🏥

Created by the ED Education & Simulation team, the escape room blended clinical skills, teamwork and communication in a fast‑paced, gamified format.

With structured briefings and debriefs, staff walked away with sharper decision‑making skills and plenty to reflect on.

It’s all part of our commitment to supporting staff with meaningful education that reflects the realities of their roles 💜

Sharing the love this Valentine's Day ♥

Did you catch Lachie and Peanut walking out of State Rehabilitation Service (SRS) recently?

The fathers both sustained sporting injuries and spent five months in our SRS learning to walk again 🚶

During their stays they became great mates, and their competitive spirits spurred on their rehab 💪

They walked out of hospital together surrounded by their nearest and dearest, the SRS staff members that had been part of their journey, and a whole lot of love!
