We’re incredibly grateful to Melissa for running the HBF Run for a Reason in support of Parkinson’s WA šŸ’™šŸƒā€ā™€ļø
Inspired by her late father’s journey with Parkinson’s, Melissa ran to shine a light on Parkinson’s and to honour the beautiful, tender moments her family shared with him along the way. Her story is a powerful reminder that even in the hardest seasons, love and connection can shine through ✨
If you’re looking for a reason to run this year, we’d be honoured if you chose Parkinson’s WA. Every step helps support families living with Parkinson’s šŸ’™

The Esperance Support Group re-formed last year thanks to the wonderful support of our Support Group Coordinator Rhiannon and local community member Faye, whose mum lives with Parkinson’s. The group now meets monthly, with guest speakers joining in person and via telehealth. Recently, Dr David Blacker linked in to share valuable insights on living well with Parkinson’s.
On 6 February, Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist Liz Bickley visited to present a Parkinson’s update, sparking a great discussion about exercise and symptom management. The morning wrapped up with a cuppa and a chat — a reminder of how important it is to connect and support one another.
Liz’s visit was part of our long-running PNS Outreach Service, which has supported the Esperance community for over 10 years through home visits, education, telehealth and aged care support. We’re always inspired by the commitment of our regional communities — including one family who travelled more than 200km from Norseman to attend.
If you’d like to join the Esperance Support Group, please contact the PWA office for more information. šŸ’™

šŸ’œ What Happens in the Brain with Parkinson’s?
Parkinson’s arises when nerve cells (neurons) in a part of the brain called substantia nigra gradually die or become damaged. These neurons produce a chemical messenger called Dopamine which helps send signals between neurons so the brain can control smooth, coordinated movement.
With fewer dopamine-producing cells:
• Movements can become slower or shaky šŸ–ļø
• Balance and coordination may be affected āš–ļø
• Everyday tasks can take longer ā³
Parkinson’s is a medical condition caused by changes in the brain—not just ā€œgetting older.ā€ Understanding this helps us support those living with it. šŸ’œ

What a truly magical evening at our annual Twilight Sail, proudly hosted by the South of Perth Yacht Club for Parkinson’s WA financial members. With perfect weather, calm waters and the most beautiful sunset, the atmosphere was simply unforgettable. šŸ’™āœØ
Members enjoyed relaxing sailing along the river, guided by experienced sailors, with fresh air, great company and delicious nibbles on board. The evening continued back at the clubhouse with a lovely buffet dinner, warm conversation and plenty of laughter.
The excitement built as the raffle winners were announced — congratulations to Maria, our thrilled first prize winner! šŸŽ‰šŸ‘
A wonderful night of connection, community and special memories on the water. šŸ’«
A heartfelt thank you to the South of Perth Yacht Club, the generous sailors, and all our wonderful members who made the evening so memorable.

What a fantastic morning at the Ex-Footballers Morning Tea on Wednesday, 11 February! ā˜•šŸ‰
It was wonderful to bring together former AFL and WAFL players who are now living with Parkinson’s and their wives. The room was filled with plenty of banter, shared stories, and that unmistakable footy camaraderie.

We were privileged to hear from guest speaker John Mamo from the Perron Institute, who shared insights into the latest research and developments in Parkinson’s medications. Sheree Ambrosini (PNS) also spoke about the range of services and support available through Parkinson’s WA, highlighting the many ways we’re here to help individuals and families navigate their Parkinson’s journey.

It was a great learning opportunity for all, paired perfectly with a delicious morning tea and even better company. šŸ’™

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and especially our guest speakers.

What a wonderful day of connection, learning and shared experience šŸ’™
On Thursday 5 February, our Support Group Leaders Development Day at The Niche brought leaders together to learn, reflect and support one another. We were grateful to hear from Janel from Alike WA, who shared practical tips for running strong, supportive groups, and from Rhiannon, our Support Group Coordinator, who provided valuable updates and guidance. Kayleigh, one of our Parkinson's Nurse Specialists also gave an update on the latest developments in Parkinson's care and research.
One of the highlights was seeing leaders openly share what works in their own groups, listening, learning and lifting each other up šŸ¤āœØ Paired with a delicious morning tea and lunch, it was truly a lovely day filled with fellowship and growth.
A heartfelt thank you to all our incredible support group leaders for the care and commitment you bring to our Parkinson’s community šŸ’™

So grateful to Miriam and her family team ā€œShakin’, Not Stirredā€ šŸ’™šŸƒā€ā™€ļø
Last year, they ran the HBF Run for a Reason in support of Parkinson’s WA, inspired by their aunty’s Parkinson’s diagnosis at a young age. Their run was a powerful show of love, family, and hope, and we were truly honoured to be their chosen cause.
If you’re thinking about why you run this year, we’d love for you to consider running for the Parkinson’s WA community. Every step helps make a difference ✨
Thank you, Miriam and team, for running with heart šŸ’™šŸ‘

šŸ§ šŸ½ļø Brain Bites for Parkinson’s
Are you living with Parkinson’s? We’d love to hear from you.
Researchers at Edith Cowan University, supported by a grant from Parkinson’s WA, are developing Brain Bites — a Mediterranean-style meal box designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s and their families.
We’re inviting people with Parkinson’s to co-design this meal box by sharing their thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on what a meal box should look like for the Parkinson’s community. Your lived experience is essential in shaping a solution that truly works.
