Hayfever season is coming.. What can you do?

Ayurveda always looks at the root cause first..
Possible triggers:
🟡External factors such as pollen, dust, smoke, animal fur or hair etc
🟡Exposure to humidity dust and cold
🟡Asthma
🟡Persistent of disease
🟡Sinusitis
🟡Family history of hay fever
🟡Low immunity
🟡Unhealthy/incompatible lifestyle during seasonal changes

Prevention is better than a cure

If you suffer from hay fever, start paying extra attention to your diet and lifestyle a few months before your symptoms would normally start.

Recommendations in the lead up and during hayfever season.

FOOD
🟡Try a seasonal cleanse at the junction of winter and spring.
🟡Eating seasonally - foods harvested during any season contain the antidotes to offset the characteristics of the season.
🟡It’s time to up those lighter seasonal green vegetables and have a bit less of the heavier starchy and protein-rich foods which we needed during the winter.
🟡Eat freshly prepared, warm foods and drinks with plenty of herbs and spices – include turmeric and black pepper in your daily diet. Raw unheated honey is great too for dealing with extra mucous – favour a local variety of this.
🟡Avoid cheese, yoghurt, bananas, desserts, sweets and cold foods and drinks if you are suffering from mucous as these encourage its formation.
🟡Avoid alcohol
🟡Avoid heavy, fermented, fried, sour foods

DRINKS
🟡Enjoy lots of warm drinks. A great tea for hay fever is ginger.

DAILY ROUTINES
Here are a few lifestyle suggestions that will help – see full article on our blog for instructions.
🟡Medicated Nasal Drops.
🟡Do steam inhalations.
🟡Gandoosh – Oil pulling.
🟡Mouth Gargle.
🟡Home remedy:
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cardamon
¼ tsp ground ginger
½ tsp ground black pepper
½ tsp ground turmeric
2 tbsp honey or enough to make a smooth paste
Take ¼ tsp 2 x daily or as often as needed. Follow with a sip of warm water.

Craving of a Pregnant Mother should always be met.

The 2nd Trimester is a time called Douhridam meaning ‘two hearts’. This is a very unique and special time for a mother to experience having two hearts - their heart and their child’s heart.

This is often the time when cravings start and these are the desires of the fetus expressed through the mother - do they should always be fulfilled.
If the desires are likely to harm the fetus then they should be provided in a healthy way or with beneficial substances capable of counteracting their harmful effects.

Fulfillment of desires freshly in the baby possessing longevity, vibrancy, intelligence and a well behaved child.

Bring in my 2nd Trimester I have been craving fresh fruit juices, and fresh fruit- especially pomegranates and persimmons! Making the most of these while they are in season!!

The basic difference between Ayurveda and Western allopathic medicine is important to understand. Western allopathic medicine currently tends to focus on symptomatology and disease, and primarily uses drugs and surgery to rid the body of pathogens or diseased tissue. Many lives have been saved by this approach. In fact, surgery is encompassed by Ayurveda. However, drugs, because of their toxicity, often weaken the body.

Ayurveda does not focus on disease. Rather, Ayurveda maintains that all life must be supported by energy in balance. When there is minimal stress and the flow of energy within a person is balanced, the body’s natural defense systems will be strong and can more easily defend against disease.

How nice are the colours in this Dahl pot! A simple red lentil Dahl with spices and grated beetroot.

Have you got a nourishing lunch planned for today?

Lunchtime is when our digestive fire 🔥 it at its highest (so is the sun ☀️), so it is best to have your main meal of the day at lunchtime. Then have a early, small, light and easy to digest dinner.
This will help your digestion, bowel movements, nutrient absorption and energy levels.

Have a healthy day! 😋🍵

Okra Recipe

I few people have requested a Okra Recipe, so here’s a simple and delicious one for you to try..

Serves 2
INGREDIENTS

🟡1 tsp ghee or coconut oil
🟡1/2 tsp mustard seeds
🟡1/2 tsp cumin seeds
🟡A pinch of asafoetida/hing (optional)
🟡5-6 curry leaves
🟡1/2 tsp turmeric powder
🟡2 tsp fresh ginger, finely grated
🟡2 tsp Garam masala
🟡4 handfuls of okra
🟡1/2 red onion
🟡juice of ¼ a lemon
🟡salt to taste

METHOD
🟡Cut the okra into 0.5cm slices and slice the red onion.
🟡In a large pot/wok heat up the ghee. Add the mustard seeds and fry until they start to pop. Add the cumin seeds and curry leaves, then the asafoetida/hing if using.
🟡Now add the red onion and cook well, then add the ginger. When the onion is cooked add the okra.
🟡Then add the turmeric, garam masala and stir through.
🟡Place the lid on and continue to cook, stirring occasionally.
🟡If the okra is starting to stick, add a pinch of salt as this will draw water out of the veggies. Cook until the okra are soft.

🟡Before serving, garnish with coriander leaves, lemon juice, black salt/Himalayan salt and pepper to taste.

You will see in the picture I also added in some snap peas! Yum!

Happy Cooking! 😋

Have you tried OKRA?
I love this vegetable!

Okra is ojas building (immune building) like most plants in the mallow family. It is also slimy and astringent, a seemingly unusual combination. Since okra is also cool, it is tri-doshic (good for everyone)

Okra is especially helpful for relieving dryness in the joints.

And it’s delicious!

You can usually find okra at farmers markets, fruit & veggie places that stock Asian varieties. I got this from the Spudshed in Innaloo.

This back treatment is called Kati Basti, it is used for lower back pain, disc problems and sciatica.

A ‘well’ made of dough is placed over the effected area and filled with warm medicated oil. This warm medicated oil penetrates into the deep tissues, lubricating the joints and releasing the tightness in the muscles. This is then followed by a massage concentrating on the effected area and a localised herbal steam.
A series of 5 - 10 sessions is recommended for optimal results, along with a personalised home treatment plan.
