Meet John, our compassionate and considerate provisional counsellor at the MHFA Wellness Hub. His impact on the Hub has always been deeply valued, as he brings kindness, insight, and lived experience into every session.

In today’s conversation, John reflects on how seeking professional support became one of the “best decisions” of his life, and how that journey inspired his career switch to give back to the community. He also explains how trust shapes his practice, guiding him to show up authentically and build a safe, grounded space for his clients.

Having experienced counselling himself before stepping into the role of counsellor, John understands both perspectives, making his approach uniquely empathetic, relatable, and effective.

Curious about John’s story and approach? Watch the full video here: https://youtu.be/6XVGAewaQVc

Seeking help is not a weakness!

Reaching out for help comes from a place of strength and bravery! Sharing your lived experience and opening up about your journey helps break the stigma around Mental Health. You don’t have to be alone in this; there is a whole community waiting to listen with kindness and empathy to your unique journey!

In this Let's Talk episode, Ramin Iranfar shares his experience working on our Empowering Voices of Harmony podcast, the stories he has heard from the Iranian community and how he advocates for mental health and reducing cultural stigma through film making.

The first step starts with learning about mental health, whether you’re supporting someone else or you’re on your own journey.

At the MHFA, we are dedicated to providing this education through our mental health first aid courses, and alongside them, we also deliver Lunch and Learn webinars that address a range of mental health concerns.

These monthly webinars have a global reach as they are always free and can be accessed anywhere in the world! We have two sessions happening this October, on the 20th with Prof. Ajeet Singh and the 27th with Prof. Melissa Green; you don’t want to miss them!

As part of our mission here at the MHFA, we offer support groups for bipolar and a range of other mental health challenges. This is because every experience is unique from one person to another, but sharing your journey can be powerful!

In this video, we share a message from support groups administrator, Amanda Cops, where she encourages those looking for an open and welcoming space to share their journey with their mental health. This environment is a place of non-judgement and respect, a place where belonging is fostered.

Opening up about your own experiences can be daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. We are here, when you’re ready, to take that step through the door and join us in providing support.

She reflects on the challenges and rewards of engaging with the community and how these experiences have solidified her aspiration for a career in mental health advocacy.

Creating a mentally healthy workplace begins with awareness, compassion, and the confidence to support those around us, and sometimes that starts with one thoughtful conversation.

Facilitated by Michelle Kleinert OAM, she provides real-world experience, mental health advocacy, and a sense of community in her sessions that are grounded in empathy, trust, and connection. The tools learned in her course are practical and translate into everyday workplace life.

This course supplies you with the means to have those open conversations and take the right steps when someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis, to create a safe and supportive workplace.

In this video, we share a message from our Patron - Emeritus Professor Bruce Tonge AO, who speaks about the importance of lived experience and the power of support groups in supporting mental health.

We deeply value the strength, insight, and lived experience of those who have faced mental health challenges, recognising their vital role in shaping recovery, understanding, and a more inclusive future for everyone.

This belief is at the heart of what we do. Through a wide range of peer-led support groups including bipolar disorder, hearing voices, OCD, anxiety, and many more – we create meaningful spaces where people can connect, share, and grow together.

These groups show the power of community: lived experience becomes guidance, and support becomes hope. Learn more about our support groups: https://supportgroup.mhfa.org.au/

Did you know that between 2% and 5% of Australians are affected by Borderline Personality Disorder at some stage in their lives?

BPD is a complex mental health condition characterised by significant instability in mood, self-image, relationships, and impulsivity that is often misunderstood and stigmatised. Individuals with BPD may experience intense emotions, difficulty with relationships, and self-harming behaviours.

This Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Week, we want to build a shared understanding and reduce the stigmas around BPD. We listen and recognise the strengths it takes to move forward and seek support.

If you need a supportive community where you can be yourself, be seen, and heard, MHFA’s monthly BPD Support Group is always there for you. Visit our website for more information: https://supportgroup.mhfa.org.au/borderline-personality-disorder

Andrew shared one of his first experience with the Mental Health Foundation Australia was through a support group for OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) — just one of more than 30 groups currently offered. It stood out as a meaningful first step: a space to feel seen, heard, and not alone.

In this Steps I’ve Taken spotlight, Andrew shares his journey navigating OCD, and how lived experience support became a turning point.

These stories are a powerful reminder of the role community, vulnerability, and connection play in mental health journeys.
