This week, I’d been dropping “it’s my birthday on Saturday !” at work like a total Leo (even though I’m not 😅).
When I was leaving on Friday, a co-worker smiled and said: “Have an amazing time celebrating the big 30th!”
I laughed, “Oh gosh no, I’m turning 37!”
She laughed back, “I thought it must’ve been a significant one since you’d been sharing it.”
Bless her, and I love that she thought I was 30.
Somewhere along the way, many of us stop celebrating ourselves.
Maybe our kid’s birthday is around the same time, and we give them the spotlight.
Maybe we tell ourselves “it’s just another day.”
Or maybe… we’re quietly avoiding the whole idea of getting older.
Whatever the reason, when we dismiss our birthday, we often dim ourselves too.
We miss the chance to reflect, honour, and feel seen in our own life.
And honestly, we deserve better than that.
So… let’s not,
Wait for someone to plan something, wait for the “milestone” birthday worthy of a fuss, or wait to be celebrated without asking for it.
It’s YOUR day.
The anniversary of your arrival on this wild planet. The one day a year that is literally about you, your growth, your existence, your story.
So, book the dinner.
Buy the cake.
Post the selfie.
Take the day off.
Wear the sparkly thing.
Tell people it’s your birthday like it’s a good thing, because it is.
And when we do that unapologetically?
We pass that energy on.
We become the kind of people who hype up others on their birthdays, too.
We create a culture of celebration, not quite shrinking.
How will you celebrate yourself this year?
