Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) = restraints and behaviour support plans...
Not necessarily for us.
For us at Capacity Builders WA, PBS is so much more!
What does it mean to us? Well, a major hint is written on those purple plans (NDIS plan); PBS is funded under 'improved relationships'!
While eliminating restraints, writing behaviour plans and ensuring restraints are documented, reported and reflected on, we feel focusing on both the person and their system (family, formal supports and even therapists) harnesses meeting needs across all levels of a person's life.
Why is this so important? Creating understanding on what a person is living and experiencing and what a system is also needing helps us to create functional, respectful and usable plans.
We aim to improve the relationships around the person and for the person to have rich understanding of their needs and to have an invested system that can meet those needs.
What does this achieve?
Ultimately, the person's success. Everyone's in and this success is shared!!
Risk adversity is so strong in the sector (and at times, it is needed), but we also need to be human and think 'what would I want to achieve in this scenario?'
This outlook naturally and functionally reduces unmet need responses (behaviours of concern) and we see a narrative around the person and team of empathy and discussing successes!
We are grateful and privileged to work in this space!
