Never let anybody make you feel like WLS is the easy way out...

"A lot of people don't realise what's behind the weight loss and what WLS really entails. All they see is a "before" and "after" and fail to understand what bariatric surgery actually means and what impact it may have on both mental and physical aspects."

Nutrition info labels can be seriously confusing! 😵‍💫 Check out our top tips to navigate labels to stay on track and reach your goals 😇

💙 Serving size vs. 100g: If you're comparing nutrients in similar products, use the 100g column. If calculating how much of a nutrient you need, or your energy intake, use the serve column.
💙 Look for protein: Protein is our best friend - if you're finding it in packaged products, it's a bonus to your whole food intake.
💙 Energy: Also known as kilojoules or calories, it's great to be mindful of how much energy a products contains.
💙 Less than 25g sugar: Avoiding sugar is not necessary, but the best choices at less than 5g and okay choices are 5 - 15g/100g.
💙 Fibre: Keeping regular and your gut bugs happy is key to feeling great! Aiming for about 25g per day is a great goal.

There are going to be days/weeks when you fall off. That’s being human. And being human is messy.

Fruit is a really important part of your diet! Fibre, vitamins and minerals galore ❤️

However, eating any food quickly can cause bloating, indigestion and gas 😵‍💫

Eat your fruit, but eat it slowly 😂💙

Thank you for sharing 🤍

The scales can be a useful tool after WLS, but they can also be misleading at times to produce some negative experiences for some.

❌What the scales don't tell us much about is body composition❌

Possibly you've gained some muscle 💪🏼 and lost some fat, but such changes will not show on the scales 🤯

Thinking of other ways to track change or progress may be valuable for your individual WLS journey...

You guys loved🤍😍 our last ‘smart on-the-go bariatric snack’ post, so here we are with another smart snack edition…

Take the stress away at snack time with a few of our favourite smart, protein rich snacks suitable for after WLS:
🥛Try a Up & Go Protein Energize 🤤
🧀Cheese stringers
🥚Boiled eggs
🥒Hummus and vegetable sticks (choose whichever veg you enjoy)
💪🏼Protein balls (⚠️watch out sugar in pre-packaged options⚠️)
🥄Yoghurt tubs. Chobani FIT and YoPro Perform are both two high protein options

You may notice that some of these snacks are pre-portioned. Pre-portioned snacks are smart post WLS - they prevent you from mindlessly over eating as they make you stop at one serve💥

Are you feeling overwhelmed about how to reach your protein targets after WLS⁉️🤯
Want to know how you can fit 80g+ of protein in per day⁉️💪🏼

🤍Here is a rough guide! 🤍
These foods may not work for everyone and these portion sizes may not be suitable for all diet stages post op! Working with your Bariatric Dietitian is important to find out what works for you⭐️

But a few things to keep in mind when trying to meet your protein goals:
✅Preparation is key. Plan ahead to ensure your meals are protein packed
✅Base your meals around a protein source
✅Eat your protein-rich foods first before anything else on your plate
✅Incorporate lots of opportunities to eat throughout the day. Mini, more regular meals are ideal

If you are still feeling lost, need extra support and/or are just wanting to get back on track - I can help 🙋🏼‍♀️ Sign up to my new online program ‘TAKE CONTROL’ 💥🔗Link is in my bio

When we saw share this one, we knew we had to re-post! A great comparison of a protein cookie to a musashi protein bar.

"The other day I was at a petrol station and because I hadn't eaten in a while and because I like I wanted to quickly get something that had at least >20g protein 💪

One of the options I saw before reading the label was these protein cookies. But as you can see, they actually are not that high in protein (under the assumption that the total protein target you are aiming for the day is relatively high). Interestingly, protein is actually the lowest macronutrient component in these by far 🤔

This is an even more significant gap when you account for:
👉 Carbs = 4kcal/g
👉 Protein = 4kcal/g
👉 Fat = 9kcal/g

Therefore there is literally 4x as many calories coming from fat than there is coming from protein 🤯

So it is not really a good source of protein. And I guess this is just another friendly reminder of why taking 2 seconds to read a label can be useful 👍

And for reference, literally the reasons I added the Musashi High Protein Bar as the comparison are:

1. I think it makes sense to add something to compare things to. I picture the people who read my posts as intelligent people who have some nutrition knowledge. But I also feel like context is important for people who do not regularly read labels ✅

2. This bar is one of the highest protein options you will get at a petrol station. So it is an option for people who are travelling etc and specifically want something that is high protein. It also requires label reading because Musashi have other protein bars (Deluxe Protein and Protein Wafers) that are significantly lower protein than this one ✌️"

Thanks Aidan!

HERE’S WHAT I DO

💥 Make sure you take your supplements after Bariatric Surgery.
💥Taking your supplements is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
💥Common deficiencies after WLS include:

😴 Iron
😴 B12
🦴 Calcium
😴 Folate
☀️ Vitamin D

💥This can cause you to feel lethargic, weak, experience decreased bone density and muscle weakness.
