“Toxoplasma gondii is a very common parasite that usually spreads through contaminated food or contact with cat waste and most people never realize they carry it. New research shows that this parasite can directly harm human s***m in a surprising way. When scientists placed active forms of the parasite next to human s***m in the lab, many s***m quickly lost their heads which means the cell literally separated into two pieces. Even s***m that stayed intact showed signs of stress because their energy producing parts weakened which can reduce movement and overall function.
Researchers also noticed structural changes in the s***m that remained whole. Some had bent or twisted tails while others developed tiny surface cracks on the head. These changes are important because they weaken the cell at the exact moment it needs to swim and fertilize an egg. Animal studies also show that this parasite can reach the te**es and epididymis which means harm could also happen inside the body.
Scientists are now exploring whether this quiet parasite plays a bigger role in global male fertility decline than previously believed. Although lifestyle and environmental toxins remain major contributors this infectious angle may help explain some unexplained infertility cases.
