October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. đź©·

At WOOM, we're passionate about all things women's health, including raising awareness about breast cancer. Here are some important reminders for all women (during every month, not just October):

- Remember to perform monthly breast self-exams. Early detection can save lives!

- Schedule your annual mammogram if you're over 40 or have a family history of breast cancer. They play a crucial role in early detection.

- Know the signs of breast cancer, such as lumps, changes in size or shape, and skin changes. And if you notice anything different, don’t hesitate to consult your healthcare professional.

Let’s be proactive with our own health, spread the word, encourage screenings, and work together to raise awareness and support those affected by breast cancer. 💕

September is PCOS Awareness Month đź’•

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common condition that affects 1 in 10 Australian women of reproductive age. Up to 70% of women with PCOS, however, remain undiagnosed, with many finding out they have PCOS only when struggling to conceive.

One of the topics for Women's Health Week this year was 'Know Your Body'. While Women's Health Week may be over, learning more about your body - and checking in regularly - is one of the best things you can do.

As women, we tend to overlook little changes or procrastinate on getting breast lumps, period changes and other issues looked at. Sometimes, we don't even notice them in the first place. Things can change quickly, so it's important you do routine self-breast exams or track your cycle. And if you do notice that something isn't right or there has been a change, please see a medical professional and let them know your concerns. 🙏

It's almost time to celebrate Women's Health Week! đź’•

We know it can sometimes be difficult to put yourself first, especially with how busy life can be. But from September 2nd to 6th, let's all come together and prioritise women's health. The theme this year is 'Your Voice. Your Choice', and each day has a different focus:

Day 1: Know your body
Day 2: Courageous conversations
Day 3: Shame and stigma
Day 4: Point of difference
Day 5: Trust your gut

While occasional spotting or light bleeding in the very early stages of pregnancy is something a lot of women experience, vaginal bleeding can also be a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy.

Other symptoms can include persistent and severe abdominal pain (usually on one side), pain in your shoulder tip, diarrhoea and vomiting and feeling light-headed or even fainting. If you are pregnant and experiencing any of these symptoms, please visit your doctor immediately. đź’•

A uterine septum is an anomaly of the uterus that can occasionally develop in the womb. Simply put, it is a thin sheet of tissue that divides the cavity either partly or completely... and can often be missed on routine scans!

Unfortunately, while it is usually asymptomatic, it can increase your chance of miscarriage. Thankfully, if you have been diagnosed with a uterine septum, most of the time, it can be treated with surgery. 🙏

Here's something to remember...

"She is unshakeable not because she doesn’t know pain or failure, but because she always pushes through.

Because she always shows up and never gives up.

Because she believes anything is possible no matter the odds.

And perhaps what makes her beautiful has less to do with what lies upon the surface and more to do with what lies within.

She isn’t just beautiful because of her appearance. No, she is beautiful because of the way she chooses to live and love.

In the way she embraces all of life’s experiences - good or bad.

In her willingness to bend but never break, and in her courage to believe that the darkness can’t hold her as long as she continues to create her own light.

She is just like a pearl - made from grit but full of grace.

She is unstoppable - she knows its not what happens, but how she chooses to respond - with perseverance in her mind and passion in her heart!"

Spotting blood in the very early stages of pregnancy is something a lot of women experience and can result in plently of anxiety. While spotting can be a sign of a problem, often this is not the case. In fact, more than 50% of women who bleed during pregnancy go on to have healthy births. However, you should always consult your doctor just to be on the safe side and to put your mind at ease. đź’•

28/06/2024

While not as well known as endometriosis, adenomyosis can have a similar, often detrimental effect on the lives of those with the condition. The two also have overlapping symptoms, such as heavy bleeding and pelvic pain. In the past, due to its growth within the wall of the womb, adenomyosis was more difficult to detect than endo and generally was only diagnosed following a hysterectomy. Advancements in technology, however, mean we can now pick it up on a high-quality transvaginal ultrasound.

Like endo, we don’t know why adenomyosis develops, and those present later in life are often counselled to have a hysterectomy as treatment. But for people looking to start a family, that's not exactly the best option. In that case, we might turn to hormonal medication to suppress adenomyosis and hopefully boost the chances of getting pregnant. 💕

When you’re trying to get pregnant, it’s good to have s*x 3 times a week. And the perfect time is around ovulation. That means in a 28-day cycle, ovulation (egg production) is around day 14. Keep in mind this may vary by a couple of days - our suggestion is to start trying from about day 12. Make a note in your diary or even your phone if you need a reminder! 🙏
