The Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) usually emerges around 6-9 months of age an should integrate around 9-11 months. It plays an important rolel in helping babies transition from tummy to crawling and later supports posture and co-ordination.
When the STNR is retained, kids may struggle with slouching, difficulty sitting still or maintaining attention, awkward crawling patterns or skipping crawling all together, challenges with hand writing reading or eye tracking
This happens because a retained STNR keeps the body in a 'movement pattern' when the brain actually needs stability to learn.
From a Chiropractic point of view, making sure the nervous system is working to the best of its capacity, so that the brain and the body communicate well, can encourage reflex integration. Coupled with some movement home exercises, chiropractic can help improve posture, coordination and help the body feel calm and organised.
If your child struggles with focus, posture or co-ordination, their nervous system may need some support. Please feel free to reach out to learn more.
