Backpacks……and gait; head angle; load carriage and trunk posture…….Say What???? 🧐
Since school is back it’s only fitting we talk about backpacks and how heavy they are and how our (our kids) body is impacted. Have we checked how our kids are standing with those bags? Are they in a forward neck position? Are the bags ridiculously heavy….? Are they complaining of sore feet or heels?
We did a little research and found several studies undertaken that found the following:
Backpacks can “lead to poor posture due to the posterior placement of the load, which over time may contribute to low back pain and musculoskeletal complications.” This is what a study found that examined postural and load distribution differences with backpacks. Load distribution and postural changes in young adults when wearing a traditional backpack versus the BackTpack, Kimberley D Dahl, He Wang, Jennifer K Popp, D. Increased pressure on the forefoot and heel regions was consistently reported…” Agarwal, P, Sharna A, Rai, RH, BansalN, Sharma N, Sidiq M, Reddy Vandals, VK Shaphe MA Esht, Malholtra, Kashoo, ChahalA, Exploring the impact of Backpack carrying on plantar pressure and fair patterns in children: A systemic Review, Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies, 2025
