Thyroid nodules are common and affect half of the general population by the age of 60 years. The causes are believed to be due to hypothyroidism, mutational changes or autoimmunity. They can be associated with over- or underactivity of the gland and may sometimes be malignant.

Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) has been used in Turkey to self-treat thyroid dysfunction such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Now a controlled clinical study has evaluated the impact of dill on patients with thyroiditis and benign thyroid nodules. They were divided into two groups: placebo (n =35) and dill group (n = 33). Dried and ground dill (300 mg) was put into capsules and patients on active treatment were given three capsules per day for 90 days. Various tests were conducted at the beginning and end of the study, including thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), anti-thyroglobulin (anti-Tg), and C-reactive protein (CRP), and thyroid nodule dimensions were measured by ultrasound.

After 90 days, compared to the control group, the dill group exhibited significantly decreased TSH (by an average of 19% from a mean starting value of 2.69 compared to a 16% increase in the control group, P = 0.009), fT4 (P < 0.001), anti-TPO (P = 0.001), CRP (P < 0.001) and nodule size (by an average of 7.3% compared to a 4.5% increase in the control group, P < 0.001).

The authors concluded that dill suppressed inflammation of the thyroid gland, reduced nodule size, and lowered TSH levels in patients with thyroiditis and nodular goitre. The daily dose used was relatively low and higher doses might deliver a greater magnitude of clinical effects.

New things being tested all the time...never give up hope!

A major breakthrough in breast cancer treatment reveals that the widely used anti-nausea drug aprepitant could significantly improve survival for women undergoing chemotherapy. Researchers from Monash University and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health analyzed data from 13,811 women treated between 2008 and 2020 and found that those who received aprepitant during chemotherapy had an 11% lower risk of cancer recurrence and a 17% lower risk of death over ten years.

The benefits were even more remarkable for patients with triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive subtype with limited treatment options. In this group, aprepitant reduced recurrence risk by 34% and the risk of death by 39%. Currently prescribed mainly to control chemo-related nausea and vomiting, aprepitant’s potential to directly influence cancer progression suggests it could be repurposed as a powerful adjunct therapy.

The study’s authors emphasize the need for more clinical trials and observational research to confirm these findings and explore whether longer aprepitant use during treatment might further boost survival outcomes. Given aprepitant’s established safety profile, this discovery could quickly change how breast cancer is managed worldwide, offering new hope especially for those battling the toughest forms of the disease.

In case you needed more reason to care for your kidneys....

A groundbreaking study from Wuhan University is turning everything we thought we knew about Parkinson’s disease upside down. Researchers now believe the disease may not start in the brain at all, but in the kidneys.

The study found abnormal clusters of alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) proteins, the same ones heavily linked to Parkinson’s, inside the kidneys of affected patients. These proteins are known to trigger neurological damage when they build up in the brain. However, in animal experiments, healthy kidneys successfully cleared these proteins. When kidney function was impaired, the α-Syn proteins began to travel to the brain, setting the stage for Parkinson’s.

Shockingly, even people with chronic kidney disease but no neurological symptoms were found to have α-Syn buildup. This discovery suggests the kidneys might act as an early “reservoir” for toxic proteins, which could later spread through the bloodstream or nerves and affect the brain.

Though early and based on limited data, this research could completely change how we understand and treat Parkinson’s. It raises the possibility that monitoring and protecting kidney health might one day help prevent or delay the onset of this devastating condition.

Fantastic breakthrough!

Nearly all cases of cervical cancer, about 99%, are caused by high-risk HPV infections, a virus so common that 8 in 10 people will contract it at some point in their lives.

A bit of positive news? Mexican scientist Eva RamĂłn Gallegos is the first to eradicate the virus in 29 women. This is a major medical advancement and gives hope to the millions affected by the virus, 10% of whom are Hispanic women.

Gallegos is a global award-winning scientist and her massive breakthrough came after years of research and the use of photodynamic therapy that involves applying delta-aminolevulinic acid to the cervix. It then transforms into an active form and when exposed to laser light eliminates infected cells without damaging healthy tissue. Eradicated HPV viruses could be a drop in cervical cancer numbers.

Interesting and so true...women are strong and resilient...we are not meant to be the same shape as shop mannequins..

"When anthropology professor Alison Murray was studying prehistoric human remains at the University of Cambridge, she made a startling discovery about women’s bodies: They were buff. When comparing prehistoric women to modern ones, Murray found their bone structure most closely resembled that of today’s elite rowers—evidence of regular, load-bearing activity and a sign that women played a major role in the development of agriculture.

"In fact, for most of human history, women weren’t meant to be thin; they were meant to be strong. Neolithic women had arm bones 11 to 16% stronger than the rowers to 30% greater than typical Cambridge students, according to a 2017 study. Bronze Age women showed a similar pattern, with arm bones up to 13% stronger than rowers. Our cultural obsession with thinness is a relatively recent invention, born of fashion, patriarchy, and postwar consumerism. When food became more accessible, especially in Western cultures, thinness replaced fullness as a marker of status and self-discipline. It began in the late 19th century, with new warnings about 'corpulence,' the dawn of dieting as a moral virtue, and the invention and rise of the calorie, all of which paved the way for modern food restriction.

"Across time and cultures, women have consistently outlived men by 5 to 20%, says Steven Austad, scientific director of the American Federation for Aging Research. The global life expectancy at birth for a woman is 76 compared with 71 for a man. About three-fourths of centenarians are women.

"The reasons aren’t fully understood—theories include the possibility of a more responsive immune system, an additional X chromosome or the idea that mothering makes women robust—but the pattern is clear.

"And when it comes to strength, women possess a different kind of power. Yes, men typically have more upper-body muscle and larger hearts. But studies show women are often more resilient. Sandra Hunter, chair of movement science in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor has found that women can better withstand muscle fatigue. In fact, Hunter points to a 2016 review of more than 55 fatigue studies that concluded that, on average, women outlasted men by 36%.

"The emerging science paints a clearer picture: women are not the weaker s*x. We’re just built differently—and to last.

"Bursts of the “return to skinny” have always surfaced at pivotal moments — right when women are on the brink of claiming more power. It’s no coincidence. The flapper look took hold in the 1920s just as women won the right to vote — a new, boyish silhouette for a new kind of woman, one who was suddenly politically powerful. In the 1960s, Twiggy’s thin, androgynous frame became the face of fashion right as the women’s liberation movement was gaining traction, challenging traditional roles and demanding equality. In the 1990s, he**in chic surged in popularity as women flooded law schools, boardrooms, and newsrooms in record numbers — a visual counterpunch to female ambition."

This photo points to the greater strength of women in present-day societies where they do heavy farm work, and grind or pound grain (or seeds, or yam, or other foods). More pictures in Comments of neolithic grindstones and photos of women grinding grain into flour. Shown here, very ancient grindstones in the Sahara, from a time when plants grew in a greener Sahara.

Just love this!

NO WAITING ROOM

What if you didn’t wake up tomorrow and your soul is watching down thinking of all the things you didn’t get to do yet because you were too scared, or too fat, or too worried about money. And all the things you told yourself you weren’t good enough for, swam in front of your eyes, fighting for a place in the line, beside the words you didn’t say and the joy you forgot to have.

My friend, there is absolutely no room for anything in your day, other than acceptance. You will never have enough money, or time, and you will certainly never have that perfect body the world told you you need to be happy.

And before you say it’s too late to embrace this thing we call life, no it is not. You can do it right where you are. Right this minute. Get outside, breathe, look at the trees, put your bare feet on the grass - hand on your heart to feel that pulse - and that’s it.

You’re living.

Keep that up.

Wait up for the moon sometimes or get up early to see a sunrise, just because you can.
Jump in the lake. Run, skip.
The things you need to feel alive are free and all around my friend.
You just have to see them.

Let in opportunity and say yes to the invitations that scare you a little, in a good way.
Say no to some of the things you force yourself to do, knowing they rinse you of your peace.

Life was never supposed to be a waiting room, it was supposed to be a hillside, with paths leading in every direction and mountains as far as the eye can see, hiding adventures and new friends behind them.

Don’t let yourself get to the end of this ride without having stopped to smell those beautiful roses.
That’s the only thing you need to fear in this life.
Everything else is all part of it.
It’s all just a messy, complicated, beautiful and terrifying part of it.

Chin up, throw your arms wide open
and let it be so.

How can we, as Nutritionists, promote and encourage healthy eating in the general community?

There are many organisations that are involved in assessing and implementing change, one of which is Healthway in Subiaco WA. Working in partnership with various organisations, they provide information and grants to encourage real change.

Below is a list of their goals:

Create environments that promote and increase access to healthy food and drinks and reduce the provision of unhealthy food and drinks.

Reduce exposure to the marketing and promotion of unhealthy food and drink, particularly to children and young people.

Increase knowledge and self-efficacy to motivate behaviour change and increase healthy eating patterns

Advocate to create health promoting, environmentally sustainable food systems that

ensure quality, affordable food is available and accessible for all.

The environment we live in impacts what we eat, from the availability of affordable fresh fruit and vegetables and access to unhealthy foods and drinks, to time pressures and cultural norms.

We know that often the healthiest choice is not always an easy choice.

Working in the healthcare system, it is impossible not to be aware of the effects poor food and drink choices, unhealthy environments, lack of exercise and low income can have on the health of Australians.
