Good quality sleep is essential for health and well-being, there are key activities such as detox and repair that happen when we sleep; however, the stats show that 45% of Australian adults are not getting enough sleep.

Here are my top tips for getting a better sleep routine:

😴 set a regular time to go to bed and wake up, do this for 2 to 4 weeks as it needs to be a consistent change for your body to adjust to a new routine.
😴 reduce your screen time, the blue light interrupts melatonin (your sleep hormone) production so it’s like sending a message to our brain that it is still daytime. It is best to switch off screen an hour before going to sleep. Tip change the settings on Netflix so you have to confirm after each episode to keep watching, this stops mindlessly watching multiple episodes.
😴 physical activity during the day helps you get a better night sleep so even if it’s a walk around the block or dancing to your favourite music.
😴 herbal teas and blends that include chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, oats, valerian can assist to help wind down and get to sleep easier (this is a good option so you can avoid regular tea, green tea, coffee or hot chocolate which all have caffeine in them)
😴 Magnesium can assist with sleep as it helps relax the nervous system and your muscles. If you have pain that is keeping you awake or waking you up then look at support for this.
😴 listen to a podcast, audiobook, meditation, relaxing music or white noise with a sleep timer or read a book to help you unwind and quieten the ticking mind.
😴 if you wake up and struggle to get back to sleep then you can listen to the things mentioned above especially doing a meditation as this has similar benefits to sleep so it’s better than tossing and turning.

If you are doing all these things and still struggling to sleep then book in to see a health professional to help you get a few more zzz

Beauty Sleep is Real 🙏 According to a study published in Nature Cell Biology in 2020, a good night's sleep can do wonders for our physical appearance!

The research shows that our body's internal clock is responsible for regulating collagen
synthesis, a vital protein that keeps our skin, bones, muscles, and joints healthy.

Over half our body weight is ECM (extra cellular matrix) and half of this is collagen. It has been long thought that the collagen in our ECM is fully formed by the time we reach the age of 17 and cannot be easily be modified.

This new research has shown that this is not necessarily the case. They have now discovered that some components of collagen are actually broken down during the day and replenished at night.

All the more reason to make sure you are getting enough zzzzs!

I am super excited to bring back my Nutrition on a Plant Based Diet health talk next week so here is a little history on me and eating plant based:

🥑 I have been a vegetarian since 2002. I was never a big red meat eater, I preferred chicken
or fish and as a family we ate vegetarian meals regularly

🥦 I had been thinking about it and made the final decision after doing an assignment (for
my naturopathy studies) on the advantages and disadvantages of being a vegetarian. I
don’t think that was my lecturer’s intention 😉

🙅‍♀️ I don’t like mushrooms so sometimes this means I have even less choices on a menu as
it’s popular for a plant based dish. Choices have got better over the past 20 years - it used
to be bruschetta and a salad were my go to options, now there are so many more.

🥦 I am a firm believer in respectful discussions about diet (and really anytime there is a difference of opinion), the reason it is important to me is that if I want people to respect my choices, I have to respect their choices. This doesn’t mean I won’t talk about it. Also as a health professional I understand that one diet doesn’t suit everyone.

🌽 I always eat before events when I don’t know what the food is going to be. I love food
and never skip a meal so don’t want to be hungry. These days it’s not often I have to do this and it’s easy with my family as we have 5 vegetarians and one pescatarian as well as a few meat eaters.

🌶️ My favourite cuisine to cook at home is Mexican, we had a lot of Mexican food growing up as my mum worked in a Mexican restaurant but it is also vegetarian friendly. Eating out I love Spanish and Greek food too - again as there are lots of delicious plant based dishes

🥔 If I could only eat one food it would be avocado or potatoes. They are both delicious and nutritionally avocado is really good but I’d probably go with potatoes as there are so many different ways to eat it 😄

If you had to choose one food what would it be??

Check out our events page for details of my talk next week which covers how to get all your nutrients with a plant based diet 🙌

Plant Based eating isn’t boring and doesn’t leave you hungry!!

Often people think a bowl of lettuce is what a meal is for someone following a plant based diet 🤦🏻‍♀️

The second and third images are of my lunch and dinner yesterday.

The first one is spiced cauliflower on hummus with green beans and feta (I also had a piece of sourdough spelt bread with this), the second one is a satay vegetable with brown rice which is one of my go to winter meals. I’m not precise in my measurements for recipes but I’ll do my best:

Ingredients:
A couple cloves of garlic - crushed
1 x Brown onion - diced
2 x carrots - peeled and chopped
500g pumpkin - diced (I leave the skin on)
1 x broccoli - cut into small florets
4 handfuls of frozen peas
1 tin chickpeas drained

Satay sauce
1/2 bottle pasata
1/2 tin coconut
3 tablespoons peanut butter
Paprika - add a good dash of this (maybe a teaspoon)
Salt
Pepper

2 cups cooked brown rice

I use coconut oil to cook the vegetables in a large pot (I use my wok).
Add to the pot in the order listed above, once add peas and chick peas then add sauce ingredients.
Stir and mix together and then let simmer for 5 to 10 mins. Serve with brown rice.

This makes 4 serves for us 🙌

If you would like to know more about plant based eating come along to my health talk next week!

Deep belly breathing or diaphragm breathing is one of my go to recommendations for those with anxiety, overwhelm and/or stress which is pretty much everyone (joking… not joking!).

It is such a simple thing to add into your routine and makes such a difference. This relaxed breathing sends a biological message to your brain that everything is ok and your life isn’t in danger. It’s like resetting your computer.

Often in modern day life we respond to everyday situations like a full inbox or a messy house like our life is in danger but there is no threat to our life if we don’t do these things.

You get the best results from doing it daily and it only has to be a few minutes. I recommend you breathe in for 5, old for 5, breathe out for 5 and repeat this 5 times, do this morning and night.

You can use a reminder on your phone or smartwatch, some watches have a program to follow. If you need something to follow you can use an app or a you tube video.

I have given doing a video a go so you can also follow this.

I’ve been a long time belly breather thanks to playing the trumpet in school. You had to breathe from the belly to be able to play properly. Also many years of meditation and breathing exercises keep me on track 😇
