❗️CLIENT SHOUTOUT❗️

2 years ago, Lawson shattered his femur in a motocross accident. Since then, it’s been a long, rough road with multiple surgeries, rehab, setbacks etc.

Lawson has been working extremely hard with multiple rehab and gym sessions each week to get his body back to full function, and not only that, but to excel in his sporting endeavours. Last weekend, he was able to showcase these efforts.

He competed in the Junior State Swimming Championships and absolutely smashed it! Lawson came home with gold in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, gold in the 200 IM, silver in the 100m backstroke and silver in the 50m butterfly. He also broke 3 club records in the 100m and 200m freestyle, and the 200 IM.

This goes to show that with hard work, perseverance and dedication, you truly can achieve anything! Keep up the incredible work, Lawson. You will definitely be a name to look out for in the near future!

❗️MOVEMENT ANALYSIS❗️

Fixing someone’s pain long term requires detailed analysis of how they move and use their body. If you are unable to find a dysfunction in their movement around the region of their pain, you aren’t looking hard enough and haven’t done enough testing to find the root cause of the problem.

This client was experiencing low back pain that manual therapy wasn’t eliminating. When he came to HEXA, we tested out his single leg stance ability and found some big differences as shown in the images.

When standing on his right leg, he is able to naturally hold a vertical spinal alignment without thinking about his movement and posture. However when on left single leg stance, what he believes to be vertical spinal alignment is actually quite skewed. When corrected through verbal cueing and some hands on postural shifting, he was able to adopt vertical spinal alignment, which he reported as feeling very unnatural and “twisted.” This movement compensation in his spine represented a functional weakness in one glute/posterior oblique sling system compared to the other side.

Now we have determined the root cause of the pain, we are able to create a strength plan to correct the muscle imbalances and movement compensations and eradicate his pain long term.

Fix the movement, fix the pain!

❗️POSTURE CORRECTION❗️
Our posture, or the position we put ourselves into while moving and using our bodies, has a direct influence on what structures are being loaded up; ligaments, discs, joint spaces, muscles, tendons etc etc.
The first step to eliminating pain is understanding how we are currently using and moving our bodies, versus what SHOULD be happening.
For example, here we have Brody who has a tendency to load up into his lower back by overarching/overextending his lumbar spine. Our first step in correcting this is teaching him how to control his spine into different positions.
In the first photo, Brody was told to stand relatively relaxed, but also maintain what he thought would be a good upright posture. Immediately we see what we call a “sway back” posture. This is where the hips shift forwards, increasing loads into the lower back, and then compensating by having an increase in thoracic, or midback, kyphosis/rounding.
We taught Brody how to change his posture, in this case by shifting his hips slightly backwards, posteriorly tilting his pelvis, and extending through his midback to correct the thoracic kyphosis/rounding. This has been integral in not only helping with his low back pain, but also in being the base building block to relearning proper hinge patterning technique, and then progressing into deadlifting, WITHOUT PAIN.
Small changes in movement over time, create big changes in function and pain.
How’s your posture??

❗️RUNNING MECHANICS❗️

Changing your running pattern and improving your running efficiency can be very difficult. With so many things to focus and work on (cadence, body lean, foot strike, muscular strength and endurance, stability etc.) it’s hard to know where to start. Running drills can help as a good starting point.

Here we have Ryan Armstrong-boase demonstrating a running drill you can use to help promote a forefoot strike pattern of running, while also improving the elastic recoil of the Achilles tendon and develop calf endurance.

The elevated front leg contracts to control the speed with which the back foot falls to the floor, making it a great regression from hopping and running style drills when starting out improving running mechanics.
