What does MM2+ mean?

The Modified Monash Model (MMM) is used to classify how rural or remote a location is in Australia:
MM1 = Major city
MM2–MM7 = Rural & remote areas

For GPs, this matters because many Fellowship pathways for Overseas Trained Doctors require you to work in an MM2+ location (anything outside major cities).

We always love to see great inventions coming from Western Australia.

This is a game-changing invention — and it was made right here in WA.

It’s a device that alerts doctors and midwives the moment a baby isn’t getting enough oxygen during labour.

A small electrode is placed on the baby’s scalp once the mother’s waters have broken and the head is accessible.

It helps prevent brain injury — stopping conditions like birth asphyxia and cerebral palsy before they happen.

It also means fewer emergency caesareans, faster recovery for mums, and better starts for newborns.

It was developed by WA medtech company VitalTrace along with WA researchers, tested at King Eddies, and backed by our Government’s Future Health Research and Innovation Fund.

Backing innovation like this is one of the ways we will make WA the healthiest state in the nation.
