Yesterday was International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This marks the start of WA’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, led by the Department of Communities.

Cyrenian House’s staff and residents from Munda Mia Therapeutic Community joined the 35th March Against Domestic and Family Violence, hosted by the Centre for Women's Safety and Wellbeing - thank you to everyone who marched in solidarity.

Everyone has a role in standing up against family and domestic violence. We all need to play our part to help end the cycle of violence and promote gender equality in Western Australia.

Thank you, Minister, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit Rick Hammersley Centre Therapeutic Community; and for your kind words to Parliament. We are proud to deliver these essential AOD treatment services to communities across WA.

It was a privilege to meet Brad and Raisa at the Rick Hammersley Centre a two Western Australians working incredibly hard on their recovery journeys.

Both spoke with honesty about the challenges they’ve faced, and the strength they’ve found through structured support, connection, and a community that believes in them.

Their stories are a powerful reminder that recovery is possible - and that people do better when they can access the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

That’s why we’re committed to building a system that supports every Western Australian, no matter their circumstances, to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Today is Human Rights Day, marking the final day of 16 Days in WA, with this year's theme 'Stopping Family and Domestic Violence: Play your part'. Cyrenian House acknowledges that while gender inequality is the central factor behind family and domestic violence, alcohol and other drug use can exacerbate the impact.

That means we - along with everyone in the community - have a part to play in stopping family and domestic violence.

That's why over the past few months, we have been working with Stopping Family Violence to train all staff to recognise and respond to family and domestic violence, along with all the ways it can intersect with alcohol and other drug use.
