The authenticity of Time π
Each child develops skills in their own time. Below are some photos of one of my children, aged 4, who has been attending for 10 months. I observed him collecting a bucket and a brush from my lose parts area. He went to the wooden cubby house and painted a part of the wood that looked lighter than the rest. His human tendency for perfection as Dr Montessori defines it was evident. He spent time covering it all up until it all looked harmonious - one darker shade of the wood color. He was on a mission of his own. He then went back and took a cloth, and proceeded to clean the slide. It took 10 months for this child to develop this level of independence where he knows what he wants to do, problem solves as to how to do it, what he needs to gather to achieve this, and how to complete the task he has in mind with full focus and determination without any assistance from me. The timing was right, and this quietness, immense focus and effortless absorption following his interest came organically and without interference needed. The true essence of Montessori right there, as the child feels comfortable, confident and determined to follow their inner directives and self construct in their own ways. β€οΈ The role as directress for me has been to give him the security, assistance, space and time until he feels ready to move in a way that fulfils his needs, through simplicity and play!
