When you start working with your body—not fighting it—weight loss, calmer days, and real rest are just the beginning.

To be honest, I’ve always been reasonably fit and active and weight gain has never really been an issue, that was until I hit menopause.

So, what did I do? Everything that everyone else was doing?
Fighting cravings. Forcing workouts when I was exhausted. Ignoring hunger. Pushing through pain.

My body was the enemy, and I was determined to win.

I never won. I just got more tired, more frustrated, and further from feeling like myself.

Everything changed when I stopped fighting and started listening.

My body wasn't being difficult. It was trying to protect me.
The cravings? My body was asking for specific nutrients I wasn't giving it.

The fatigue? My nervous system begging for rest I kept denying.
The stubborn weight? My body holding on because it thought I was under threat.

When I started working WITH my body instead of against it, magic happened.

Not Instagram magic, but it felt like real magic. I woke up energised. Food became simple and satisfying. Exercise felt good instead of punishing.

The weight loss was almost a side effect of feeling amazing.

No one tells you this, but the real reason your weight won't budge after 50 has nothing to do with willpower—and it's not just 'menopause' either…

I spent a couple of years convinced I'd lost all self-control.

Same salads. Same walks. Same "good choices" I'd always made. But my waist bands kept getting tighter and the scale kept creeping up, ever so slightly gram by gram.

I was making excuses, oh I missed a pilates class, or I was away that weekend on a trip and I spent a long time sitting.

The general chatter amongst my friends was to jest over a glass of bubbles "Welcome to menopause."

But here's what I’ve discovered working on myself and hundreds of women: The issue isn't your willpower OR your hormones acting alone.

It's that your body is literally speaking a different language now, and most of us are still trying to use our 30-year-old rulebook.

When my client Kate realised this, she stopped the endless cycle of "trying harder" and started listening differently.

She didn't cut more calories or add more exercise. She made three small shifts based on what her body was actually asking for.

Within a month, her clothes were loose again. Her energy was back. She was sleeping through the night for the first time in years.

Feel like you are literally spinning out and going round and round, getting absolutely nowhere?

Why is that? Well, what I've learned after 20+ years as a naturopath working specifically with menopausal women is the biggest mistake we make is treating our changing bodies like they're still 20 and something along the way has broken.

We keep going back to what we used to do ‘way back then’, that would drop a few kilos in a week to zip up those skinny jeans for Saturday night.
Your metabolism isn't "slow," it's confused. Your hormones aren't "out of whack," they're different now, less of some, more accommodating of others. The result is a build up of fluid, body fat – usually the belly is the biggest reservoir.

Here's what most people don't tell you: Weight loss approaches fail in menopause because they ignore three critical things:
1. Your changing insulin sensitivity
2. How stress hormones now store fat completely differently
3. Why your body actually needs MORE of certain nutrients, not less food.

Once you understand what YOUR body specifically for you, the weight can come off easier than you think.

I've watched women lose 5, 15, 20+ kilos when they finally got the right approach for their unique situation.

It’s true, some women are ‘blessed’ to cope with the changes menopause brings and their weight remains stable but there is good news for you, if you are amongst the majority of women who really find managing weight is like a chasing run-away freight train at 2am.

I know you have tried really hard and it is exhausting and disheartening.

You don’t want a diet that makes you eat Kale by the kilo and other ‘weird’ foods you have to google what they are, let alone not found at your local supermarket.

Do you believe in fairy godmothers?

A long time ago, about 15 years, while studying Natural Medicine, I began a real healing journey of my own. I would have loved a Fairy Godmother then, which is probably why I am so committed to helping you now.

One day I woke with a massively swollen knee. As there was no movement in the leg, I needed a cane to walk and it took a year to rehabilitate. I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis, with an alarming prognosis of crippled hands, feet and wheelchair confinement unless I took immune suppressants drugs. Ugh, not happy, and not compliant to those drugs.

I suffered as each knee took it’s turn over the years and each time I conquered them without the drugs. Until the last time, when both knees went together. Excruciating pain, fear and depression for months I endured. Succumbing to only 6 months of Methotrexate, I got myself out of the hell and well with diet and determination.

Now, reaching mid-life myself, I can see so clearly that it is so much more important that you look after yourselves, your mind, your body, your life. You have worked, raised a family, have been through good-times and maybe major stress or illness. The time now has never been so perfect to take your life in your hands and start to feel incredibly well.
