Adolescence is a time of rapid change — emotionally, socially and neurologically. Teens are learning who they are, how they fit in, and how to manage growing pressures from school, friendships, expectations and the online world.

Big emotions, mood swings, withdrawal or risk-taking behaviours are often part of this stage, but they can also signal that a young person is struggling and doesn’t yet have the tools or language to ask for help.

Adolescent psychologists provide a safe, confidential space where teens can talk openly, build emotional regulation skills, and develop healthier ways to cope with stress, anxiety and change. Support isn’t about “fixing” teenagers — it’s about helping them feel understood, capable and supported as they grow.

Today, on Mental Health Nurses Day, we recognise the vital contribution of mental health nurses across hospitals, community services and primary care.

This year’s theme, , reflects a powerful global call for nurses to reclaim their professional identity, drive meaningful transformation, and lead mental health care reform. It speaks to resisting stigma, insisting on high quality, compassionate care, and persisting alongside people and systems to improve outcomes.

Mental health support is delivered by many professions, each bringing different expertise. We thank the mental health nurses in our community for their leadership, advocacy and commitment to those they support.

Concerned about memory, attention, or mental clarity?

Maybe you’re finding it harder to concentrate, forgetting things more often, or feeling mentally slower than you used to. These changes can be unsettling.

A brief cognitive assessment can help make sense of what’s going on. It provides a targeted look at key thinking skills such as memory, attention, processing speed and problem-solving, helping to identify strengths, changes, and areas that may need support.

Our clinical neuropsychologist uses validated test results to provide feedback and practical recommendations, so you’re not left guessing about next steps. Whether changes are linked to stress, health, ageing, injury, or another life transition, understanding your cognitive profile can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

January often comes with pressure to feel motivated, organised and “back on track.”

For many people, February is when the reality of routines, responsibilities and expectations really settles in.

If things still feel messy or tiring, that doesn’t mean you’re failing — it means you’re human. Routines take time to build, and mental energy doesn’t reset on a calendar date. Therapy can offer space to gently reset, reflect, and find rhythms that actually work for you.

Therapy is often misunderstood as something you only seek when things are at breaking point. In reality, therapy can be a space to pause, reflect, and better understand yourself — even when life feels “manageable” on the surface.

In our latest blog, we explore the role therapy plays in supporting mental health, what therapy actually involves, and why many people choose to seek support during quieter moments of reflection, like February.

"Will I be ‘fixed’ after therapy?"

It’s a common question, and a fair one to ask.

We don't consider that we're helping to “fix”, because you’re not broken.

Life can be complicated, and therapy helps you make sense of your experiences - to navigate ups & downs with greater understanding, resilience, and confidence.

Psychologists can help you learn how to respond differently, set boundaries, how to thrive even when you're uncomfirtable, or show yourself more compassion when things feel tough.

It's about growth, not perfection.

Going back to school often brings mixed emotions: excitement, anxiety, and plenty of logistics.

Our psychologists recommend you:
• Re-establish sleep and morning routines a couple of days before terms starts
• Validate your child’s feelings - nerves are normal
• Keep your own expectations flexible

And if big feelings continue, J&R have a team of psychologists who can help children (and parents) navigate the transition with confidence.

The start of a new year is a good time to pause and reflect.

Am I feeling balanced?
What’s been weighing on me?
What gave me joy last year?
What do I want more (or less) of this year?

Reflection builds self-awareness, which is the foundation for lasting change.

If you need some guidance & support this year, call our team on (08) 6107 6828 to ask about making an appointment.

Every January, many of us set ambitious goals… only to feel deflated by February. Sound familiar?

That's because sustainable change doesn’t come from willpower alone. It’s about understanding habits, mindset, and self-compassion.

A psychologist can help you break big goals into achievable steps and build habits that actually stick.

Start small. Be kind. Stay consistent

For many people, this time of year brings pressure to do it all - to be cheerful, social, and switched on. Maybe you’ve noticed the holidays turning into a checklist of tasks and traditions instead of a time to slow down and connect.

If you’re feeling stretched or emotional, it doesn’t mean you’re doing the holidays wrong. It means you’re human.

Give yourself permission to pause, set boundaries, and choose rest, delegation, and not being perfect if you're finding it too much.
