'Human rights' are fundamental freedoms and protections inherent to all people.
They’re the essentials we rely on every day: the right to health, dignity, safety, freedom, and support.
At J&R, we recognise that mental health is inseparable from overall health - and that mental health care is a fundamental human right, not a luxury.
Human Rights Day is a reminder that these rights belong to all of us, and that caring for your mental health is one small way to honour them.

You don’t need to wait for a crisis to see a psychologist.
Work pressure. Parenting. Relationship strain. Feeling stuck or unmotivated. Burnout from doing too much for too long.
Psychologists don’t just support people through mental health conditions - they also help with the everyday stressors that can pile up over time.
Therapy offers practical tools for managing stress, improving coping skills, and setting boundaries - helping you feel more in control and less overwhelmed.
Because support isn’t only for when things fall apart - it’s also what helps keep you well.
We're told that bringing a new baby into the world should be joyful, but it can also be really hard.
Perinatal Mental Health Week is a reminder that pregnancy and early parenthood can bring a mix of emotions - excitement, exhaustion, love, anxiety, and everything in between.
It’s completely normal to struggle with the transition to parenthood. In fact, 1 in 5 mums and 1 in 10 dads experience anxiety or depression during this time.
If you're struggling, reaching out for support from a friend, family member or health professional is the right thing to do. It doesn’t mean you’re failing - it means you’re human.

Feeling anxious is part of being human. It’s that jittery feeling before an interview, the worry we may feel about a loved one, or the nerves before something new.
But when those feelings stick around - when they start showing up for no clear reason, making daily life harder, or stopping you from doing things you enjoy - it could be a sign of an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety can look different for everyone. For some, it’s physical symptoms like tightness in the chest, restlessness, or racing thoughts. For others, it’s avoiding social situations, constant worry, or struggling to switch off.
Psychologists draw on research and evidence-based therapies to help you understand what’s happening, identify triggers, and develop practical tools to manage clinical anxiety in everyday life.
If you’ve noticed that anxiety is starting to affect your work, relationships, or sleep, the psychologists at J&R in Perth can help.
We’re often quick to offer kindness to friends, family, and colleagues - but much slower to extend it to ourselves.
This World Kindness Day, take a moment to practise self-kindness. That might mean setting boundaries, saying no without guilt, or practising gratitude - or maybe it’s something more physical, like preparing a healthy meal, moving your body, or getting an early night.
Kindness isn’t soft - it’s powerful. It builds empathy, connection, and resilience. And when we start with ourselves, it ripples outward.
We know many families have been waiting for child psychology appointments, and demand has remained high. At the moment, our waitlist is at capacity and we’re unable to take on any urgent referrals.
The good news? Two new child clinicians will be joining our team in the new year, which will help us open up more appointment times.
We’ll share an update as soon as wait times become more manageable. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

"Psychotherapy" means working together with a skilled clinician in a supportive space to explore your experiences and build effective tools for wellbeing.
It’s the process of talking with a qualified professional to understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and find healthier ways to manage them.
Psychotherapy can look different depending on your needs, from cognitive-behavioural approaches to mindfulness-based or interpersonal work.
At its core, it’s about creating a safe space for reflection, insight, and change, with someone who’s trained to help you navigate it all.
Last weekend our team had a wonderful morning Cultural Walk through Kings Park / Kaarta Koomba with the amazing Steve from In Culture Tours. It was very important and special to learn about the history of the land that our clinic stands on 🌱✨
We tasted native bush foods (including salty saltbush and even bush “chewing gum"). We also learned the rich cultural history of Kings Park, and reflected on the harsh impact of colonisation through truth-telling that was led with care.
There was learning, laughter, and reflection, and even a boomerang-throwing lesson… with varying levels of success! 😅🌀
Steve was such a knowledgeable, warm and approachable guide — helping us see the beauty of Kaarta Koomba through a cultural lens. We left feeling more connected, more aware, and grateful for the experience.
We can’t recommend In Culture Tours enough https://www.facebook.com/InCultureTours?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Loneliness doesn’t always look like isolation. You can be surrounded by people and still feel unseen, disconnected, or out of place.
While strong social bonds are important, connection can also come from the small, everyday moments: a shared laugh, a kind gesture, a simple “hello.” These brief but meaningful interactions can help us feel valued and understood.
At J&R, we work with clients who are navigating loneliness, social anxiety, or relationship difficulties. Together, we explore the barriers to connection and develop strategies for building self-worth and meaningful relationships.
You don’t need a big circle to feel connected. Sometimes, one moment is enough to remind you that you matter.
It's a really common question - and the honest answer is that you probably won't know when you make your first appointment. Some people come in with ideas about what they think might help, but it’s also completely fine if you don’t know your CBT from your Schema Therapy or ACT.
Our psychologists take the time to get to know you, understand what you’re going through, and recommend an approach that feels like the right fit - it might be one form of therapy, or a combination. And if something doesn’t work, we’ll adjust it together.
Because at the end of the day, the most important part of therapy isn’t the “type” at all - it’s the relationship, feeling heard, and knowing you’ve got someone in your corner.
This year’s theme reminds us that 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯'𝘴 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 - the right to safety, play, learning, and being heard.
At J&R, we believe that adding psychology to your parenting toolkit is one of the best ways to honour those rights.
When parents understand the “why” behind behaviour, use emotion coaching, and model healthy coping, they create environments where children’s rights are lived - not just learned.
These are the small, everyday actions that build resilient minds and emotionally secure relationships.
Because psychology isn’t just for when things go wrong. It can help you understand your child’s emotions, support healthy development, and build strong, secure connections every single day.
✨ Let’s celebrate Children’s Week by supporting curious minds, resilient hearts, and thriving families.

When something breaks, we know what to do...
→ Leaky toilet? Call a plumber.
→ Got the flu? See the doctor.
And when it comes to prevention, we’re onto that too...
→ We service the car before it breaks down.
→ We see the dentist for a clean - not just a filling.
So why do we still hesitate when it comes to our mental health?
With almost 43% of Aussie adults experiencing a mental disorder at some point in their life, there shouldn't be stigma around seeking help. If anything, it should be celebrated.
Psychology helps you build resilience, find balance, and show up as your best self. Because your mental health deserves the same care and attention as everything else in your life.
