If you want to see how far you can go without pain relief, practice your breathing from 34 weeks - the trick to any breathing technique is staying calm and focusing on the actual breath itself - nothing else, just breath in and out.

Staying upright in labour is a fantastic way to reduce pain it also to helps the body move baby down and out! A computer simulation of birth showed that if the coccyx (tailbone) is allowed to move freely, like in an upright position, it can move nearly 16 degrees as opposed to the recumbent and semi-recumbent position which only allows approximately 4 degrees!
There is consistent evidence that positions that allow the pelvis to expand and move during birth make vaginal birth without instruments more likely.

All the aches and pains that you have during pregnancy can be extremely tiresome, making everyday tasks difficult and sleeping even more difficult. Try to remember that the discomfort you are feeling is for a good reason. The hormone relaxin helps all the tendons and ligaments inside your body stretch to allow the growth of baby and also the passage of baby through your body – hang in there it is worth it in the end!

When you have never smelt amniotic fluid before, it can be hard to know if the fluid you are leaking is actually amniotic fluid. The best way is the pop on a pad and smell the fluid, vaginal discharge will smell like vaginal discharge and urine will smell like urine – amniotic fluid doesn’t smell like either! Most women break their water while they are in labour not before.

The delivery of your placenta comes after you have had your baby. This can be actively managed with an injection of synthetic oxytocin or physiologically managed.
Active management involves receiving an injection into your thigh to help speed up the delivery of your placenta, once the placenta has separated from the uterus your health professional will use controlled cord traction to help remove the placenta.
Physiological management entails waiting for the placenta to separate naturally (this can be assisted by breastfeeding).
Most hospitals encourage active management of the 3rd stage as it generally speeds up the delivery of your placenta and can help reduce bleeding.

You might not experience Braxton hicks with your first pregnancy but it's not uncommon to feel them from as early as 19 weeks with subsequent babies. We don't worry about Braxton hicks because there is no downward pressure on the cervix, therefore no change to the cervix. Braxton hicks are like the uterus' way of training for the big day!

Iron supplementation tends to go hand in hand with pregnancy these days. We need 27mg of elemental iron daily when we are pregnant, which is a jump from 18mg of daily iron for menstruating women. However, one of the worst symptoms are the GI upset either loose stools or constipation. What tends to happen is women will cease taking their iron supplements, we have discovered that reducing supplementation from 100mg to 60mg of elemental iron can also increase your iron stores with less side effects. Its important that you talk to your Lead maternity provider as iron is an essential part of your pregnancy! We have an information sheet on common pregnancy concerns on the website if you need more information.

Breathing is great for labour but it will only work if you work it. Breath in and out, don’t over complicate it – just breath intentionally. Slow and steady between contractions and speed up during a contraction (if you need too). The horses breath is thought to help relax you, there is also a school of thought that it relaxes the perineum too!

Nothing like pregnancy to help you discover who you are! Start early, practice what makes you feel relaxed, remember that what works for one person might not work for you, so get inspiration online, but personalize it for yourself. We have known since the 1920’s how mindset can affect labour, in-fact this is how hypnobirthing and calm birth came about – the calmer you are, the faster the progress the less pain is perceived.

We love this video here at MWO! It is so true! All of your organs move when you are pregnant to allow for your growing baby. This is one of the reasons why pregnancy can be so uncomfortable at times.
