A uterine fibroid, also known as a myoma, is a non-cancerous tumour that grows primarily in the muscle tissue of the uterine wall. They may also be seen in the fallopian tubes, cervix, or other tissues surrounding the uterus. The cause of uterine fibroids is so far unknown, however, the female hormone oestrogen has been linked to its growth and development. Fibroids usually develop during a woman’s reproductive years and may shrink after menopause due to reduced oestrogen levels.
Studies have found that 70-80% of women develop fibroids in their lifetime. Some women experience no symptoms from fibroids, whilst others can experience heavy and painful periods, bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, pain during in*******se or increased urinary urgency and frequency.
The presence, number and location of fibroids can be identified during a pelvic scan performed at our clinic. To learn more about fibroids or to request a pelvic scan, talk to your Doctor or call us to book an appointment.
