“They’re so clever — why do they find writing so hard?”

💡 Dysgraphia isn’t about intelligence.
It’s about the physical effort and cognitive load needed to write.

Children with dysgraphia often know exactly what they want to say — but their brains and bodies find it hard to turn those ideas into written words.

🧠 They may struggle to:
• Form letters
• Spell words
• Organise their thoughts on paper

It’s not laziness or lack of ability — it’s a genuine difference in how their brain processes and coordinates the act of writing.

With understanding, patience, and the right supports, these children can find new ways to express their amazing ideas. 💛

✨ Communicate your way.

More than 1 million people in Australia require communication support.
This includes people with diverse needs — from speech and language disorders to cognitive impairments that affect their ability to communicate effectively.

For these individuals, communication may look different. It might include the use of speech therapy, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), visual supports, or assistive technology to express thoughts, needs, and emotions.

Supporting communication in all its forms is about more than speech — it’s about connection, confidence, and participation.
When we make communication accessible for everyone, we foster inclusion, build understanding, and ensure that every person has the opportunity to be heard, respected, and valued. 💛

🍕 Pizza Party Play! 🍅
Today’s pretend play session was all about making pizzas — using our imagination to cook up some fun and build key communication skills!

While creating our pretend pizzas, we were working on:
✨ Vocabulary (toppings, tools, actions)
✨ Following directions and sequencing (“first the base, then sauce, then cheese!”)
✨ Turn taking and cooperation
✨ Requesting, commenting, and problem solving (“I need more cheese!” / “Let’s make a pepperoni one next!”)
✨ Fine motor skills — sprinkling, rolling, and cutting pretend ingredients

Imaginative play is a powerful way to support language, social connection, and creativity — no oven required! 🧀🍄

💛💜💛💜💛. Today is International DLD Day — a day to raise awareness for children and adults with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

DLD affects the ability to understand and use language, making communication, learning, and connection more challenging.

💬 DLD is invisible, but it’s real and lifelong.
With the right support, people with DLD can thrive!

This week is Mental Health Week — an opportunity for communities to come together, start conversations, and support one another.
Let’s take time to check in with ourselves and those around us. Every small act of kindness, listening ear, and open chat helps build stronger, more connected communities. 💬
Together, we can break the stigma and make mental health everyone’s business.

🧠 Dyslexia isn’t about seeing letters backwards — it’s about how the brain processes written language.
Children with dyslexia are often bright, creative, and full of ideas — they just need the right support to unlock their potential.

As speech pathologists, we know dyslexia isn’t a reflection of intelligence. It’s a difference in how the brain connects sounds to letters and words.

At Know Howe Speech Therapy, we use evidence-based approaches to build confidence and make reading feel achievable — one sound and one step at a time. 💬✨

💬 October is AAC Awareness Month!
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication – tools and strategies that support people who find speaking difficult.

AAC can be many things:
✨ Picture boards
✨ Speech-generating devices
✨ Gestures and sign
✨ Even a combination of all the above!

AAC isn’t a “last resort” — it’s a powerful way to help people connect, share, and thrive. Every person deserves a voice, and AAC helps make that possible. 💜
