🔸Written and evaluated by Laura Glisson as part of her Master of Philosophy at Curtin University, The ONIP is a manualised, small group intervention programme for pre-primary aged children aged 5-6 with oral narrative difficulties and it’s FREE

🔹Suitable for delivery by a speech pathologist, therapy assistant, teacher or education assistant, The ONIP uses a systematic and explicit approach to the teaching of narrative macrostructure to support oral narrative comprehension and expression skills.

What parents need to know: Oral Narrative matters.
🧠 According to new Harvard research, early language experiences — especially storytelling — play a powerful role in your child’s brain development.

When children learn to tell stories, they’re not just talking — they’re organising thoughts, building vocabulary, understanding emotions, and laying the foundation for reading and writing.

🎯 Strong oral narrative skills are closely linked to later literacy success and academic achievement.

It’s never “just a story” — it’s shaping your child’s future.

Absolutely! Here’s a polished rewording of your post:

Breaking Harvard Research 🚨
And it completely shifts what we thought we knew about early reading development.

Reading difficulties don’t suddenly emerge in Grade 1—they can begin as early as 18 months. That’s right—research shows the journey to reading success or struggle starts well before children start school.

🔍 “The divergence between children with and without reading disabilities begins around 18 months, not at age 5 or 6 as previously believed.”
(Source: Harvard Gazette, June 2025)

This highlights that early identification and support are not just important—they are essential.

🧠 Early language development matters
📈 Struggles can be identified sooner than we thought
✅ The earlier we intervene, the better the outcomes

🧠✨ Phonological Awareness: The Building Blocks of Reading Success! 📚👂

Phonological awareness is the foundation for learning to read and spell. It’s all about hearing and playing with the sounds in spoken words — before letters even come into it!

Children typically develop this awareness through stages like:

🔹 Word awareness – Hearing whole words in sentences
🔹 Syllable awareness – Clapping or tapping out parts of words
🔹 Rhyming – Hearing and generating rhyming words
🔹 Onset & rime – Blending the first sound (onset) with the rest of the word (rime), e.g., c + at
🔹 Phoneme awareness – Noticing and working with individual sounds (phonemes) in words
• Blending sounds to make words
• Segmenting words into sounds
• Manipulating sounds (adding, deleting, swapping)

🎯 Strong phonological awareness makes decoding and spelling MUCH easier. It’s like tuning the brain into the music of language 🎶💬

Play is a fundamental activity for young children that naturally supports their growth across multiple developmental areas. It provides a meaningful context where children experiment with language, learn new words, and practice social skills.

Recognising play as a powerful tool and explore how engaging in different types of play encourages language learning and lays the foundation for effective communication skills which will boost their self-esteem, creativity and independence.

And don’t forget - these skill will support them in the classroom in both literacy and mathematics!
