Some of the practices we commit to as a Neurodivergent (ND) Affirming Service Provider:

- Keeping up to date with best practice - guided by the voices of people with lived experience
- Meeting individuals in a place that feels safe to them with clarity on what will be happening in the first meeting
- Managing environment to meet sensory conditions as well as from a Trauma Informed Approach
- Therapy at the person's pace and giving space for cancellations as needed
- Individual as expert on their lives and seeking to hear their story when they are ready

"Daily Diet for a Healthy Mind" by Dr. David Rock and Dr. Daniel Siegal.

A useful diagram to remind of daily practices to ensure optimum mental health. Each individual will need different amounts of time in each piece however it is great to aim for time spent on each practice daily. 🌻🌸🧠🎈🫂🛌🏋‍♂️🥁📚📝

Ecomaps are a tool that Social Workers often utilise in psychosocial assessments, initial assessments or as an an ongoing tool to understand a person's support system . They are a useful visual that identify who, and what resources, a person has surrounding them.

Below is a basic Ecomap - different lines can be used to show the strength of relationships. For instance: a jagged line can show a relationship that is stressed, strong lines can show a positive and strong relationship and thin lines a less imprtant relationship.

This tool can be used creatively using different craft supplies and props such as puppets, lego, string. paint and playdough to make it more interactive and adapt to a person's engagement needs.

Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory explains individuals in their various ecosystems and how this can impact their development. All parts of the system influence each other in all aspects of the individuals lives.

The diagram shows:

Individual – who is central.
Microsystems - includes the immediate system – family, friends, religion, school.
Mesosystem – the interactional processes of the microsystems.
Exosystem -neighbourhood, local government, mass media.
Macrosystem – beliefs, ideas and values of dominant culture.
Chronosystem – change and constancy in environment, examples include changes over life span and things such as war or recessions.

Ecological systems theory is a holistic theory that can be used to analyse a person’s situation.

Encomaps can be used in practice to display the individual’s system, the influences on the individual, and the energy flow to and from the system.

Another post to follow with an example of an Ecomap.

"When a flower doesn't bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower" - Alexander Den Heijer.

The whole picture needs to be explored and understood to be able to support people to thrive and grow.

Trauma Informed Practice - a strength based framework with five key principles - Safety, Choice, Collaboration, Trustworthiness, Empowerment.

The approach emphasises the need to do no further harm to the person seeking support, as well as building a solid working relationship where the person's story can be heard to make sense of their experience. The person is supported to find solutions and make decisions that best meets their needs.

Dandelion breathing...

A useful visual to support in regulating breathing.

Imagine smelling the flower, taking a deep breath in and holding it for as long as it feels comfortable.

Then imagine blowing the seeds of the dandelion flower, whilst releasing your breath.

Repeat until feeling calm and relaxed.

Breathwork - a form of active meditation that can calm the nervous system, slows the heart rate and can reduce feelings of anxiety. This can be used as a daily practice or when wanting to feel more grounded in challenging situations.
