BIG NEWS for WA families and intended parents ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ‘ถ

The WA Government has re-introduced proposals to update surrogacy laws, with the most significant change being the opening of altruistic surrogacy to single men and same-sex male couples for the first time.

If passed, these reforms would also modernise WAโ€™s laws to better align with other states and make access to assisted reproductive technology (ART) more equitable for all.

At Fertility Specialists of WA, we support reforms that give more people the opportunity to grow their families. Our team is here to provide expert guidance on your options now and in the future.

While these proposals are not yet law, they represent a significant step toward a more inclusive future for family building. Weโ€™ll be following developments closely and will keep you updated as they progress. Stay tuned!

Fertility rates are declining across the globe and understanding why is more important than ever.

Our National Medical Director and fertility specialist, Professor Roger Hart, is helping lead the world-first Raine Study, which is a landmark project tracking thousands of individuals to explore long term IVF outcomes. This research is a crucial piece of the puzzle in understanding why birth rates are dropping and tackling the global fertility crisis, but it needs funding to continue.

Letโ€™s support science that helps build futures families. ๐Ÿงฌ

Safeguarding Every Step of Your Fertility Journey

At Fertility Specialists of WA, protecting the identification and traceability of every s***m, egg and embryo is not just a priority; it is a fundamental part of everything we do.

With increased public attention on IVF procedures following Monash IVF's error which has seen a Queensland woman give birth to a baby that wasn't genetically hers, we want to reassure our community that we uphold the highest standards of care, safety and accountability.

That's why at Fertility Specialists of WA, we use a multi-layered verification approach that includes both advanced electronic witnessing and physical double-witnessing at every step. This ensures the highest level of protection for every patient, every time.

๐Ÿ”ฌ The Stages of Embryo Development ๐Ÿ”ฌโ
โ
While each embryo is unique, this is a rough outline of what our expert scientists are expecting to observe in the lab throughout each stage of their development. โ €โ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ
๐Ÿ’™ Day 1 โ €โ €โ €โ
Day 1 is the day that signs of fertilisation can be observed. At the fertilisation check, normal fertilisation is determined by the presence of 2 pronuclei (one from the egg and one from the s***m). This can be seen in the middle of the cell. โ €โ €โ
โ €โ €โ €โ
๐Ÿ’™ Day 2 โ €โ €โ €โ
Day 2 follows the day of fertilisation, and our scientists ideally expect to see between 2-4 cells at this stage. The quality of the embryo will be assessed by our scientists by determining how even the cells are and evaluating the presence of minimal fragments. โ €โ €โ €โ
โ €โ €โ €โ
๐Ÿ’™ Day 3 โ €โ €โ
By Day 3 our scientists expect the embryo to have divided into between 6 and 10 cells, with 8 cells being ideal. Our scientists will also assess the embryos based on the number of cells and level of fragmentation. โ €โ €โ €โ
โ €โ €โ
๐Ÿ’™ Day 4 โ €โ €โ €โ
On Day 4 the embryo is expected to be developing from a cellular stage to a compacting stage in which the cells start to push together. Ideally, all of the cells are compacted. This is called a 'morula' โ€“ a singular mass where the cells can no longer be seen individually. At this stage, the cells start the process of changing into the different types of cells that form a pregnancy โ€“ inner cell mass (baby) and trophectoderm (placenta)โ
โ €โ €โ €โ
๐Ÿ’™ Day 5/6/7 โ €โ €โ
On day 5/6/7, the embryo should have 150-250 cells that show an outer layer of cells that form the trophectoderm These cells surround a fluid-filled cavity that contains a small compact ball of cells that forms the inner cell mass. The embryo is now at the blastocyst stage. The next step is for the blastocyst to start hatching. The blastocyst gets to a size where it causes the zona (soft protective shell around the embryo) to break, allowing the blastocyst to hatch out. Once the blastocyst has completely hatched, implantation can occur.

๐Ÿ’ก New Year, New Beginnings: Tips to Boost Fertilityโ  ๐Ÿ’กโ
โ
As we step into the New Year, itโ€™s the perfect time to focus on small changes that can make a big difference in your fertility journey. Simple lifestyle adjustments like eating a balanced diet, staying active, managing stress, and reducing exposure to toxins can greatly enhance fertility for both men and women.โ
โ
For women, taking folic acid, avoiding alcohol, smoking, and certain lubricants can improve fertility health. For men, keeping your te**es cool, limiting alcohol intake, and maintaining regular ej*******on is key for supporting healthy s***m quality.โ

Hereโ€™s to fresh starts and taking the first steps toward parenthood in 2024! ๐Ÿ’•โ

๐Ÿคฏ Breaking The Stigma: Infertility Affects Everyone

Infertility is often misunderstood, leading to isolation and misplaced blame. The reality is that infertility doesnโ€™t discriminateโ€”it affects men and women equally.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸฆฐAbout one-third of cases are due to female factors.
๐Ÿ‘จAnother one-third stem from male factors.
โ“๏ธThe remaining third involves both partners or is unexplained.

Everyoneโ€™s journey to parenthood is unique, and various factors, including genetics, health conditions, and lifestyle choices, play a role. Understanding this helps prevent unnecessary blame and encourages both partners to seek support and treatment.
