This is SO important to protect our children

Last year I attended a webinar hosted by In Hope entitled โ€˜Predators Hiding in Plain Sightโ€™.

I would like to share a few things that the presenter shared.

โš ๏ธ Content of interest to predators (COITP) included:

- Children in swimsuits
- Pageantry photos
- Children doing gymnastics
- Children in diapers
- Children in the swimming pool
- Back to school photos
- PLUS everyday family photos

โ€ผ๏ธ Predators are driving minors to self-produce content on:

- In gaming environments, which are often described as the โ€˜modern day playgroundโ€™.
- Mainstream social media โ€” predators are posting and browsing content of interest, finding like-minded individuals to trade CSAM with, and finding victims to move off-site to messenger platforms.
- Messenger apps โ€” including encrypted platforms to communicate with victims.

โ›”๏ธ When a predator contacts a child, they will try to lure the child to an encrypted messenger platform.

Algorithms play a role in recommending more content, i.e., if a predator has searched for โ€˜girl gymnasticsโ€™, the algorithm will push more of the same type of content.

Predators can find other like-minded individuals in the comments section.

In live streaming, predators will often ask a child to:

- Do a handstand
- Pout at the camera
- Blow a bubble gum
- Can you draw with your feet?
- Put the camera at this angle

โ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ I cannot reiterate how important it is to have any social media account set to PRIVATE.

โŒ NEVER share images of your children on public accounts. Keep in mind that once you post an image, you lose control over it.

โŒ Please do not include photos of your children in your profile photo.

๐Ÿ™ Please supervise your children online.

โŒ Children should NEVER use devices in private spaces.

โŒ Children should NEVER communicate online with anyone they do not know in the โ€˜realโ€™ world.

We are all doing the best we can do with the information and wisdom we have ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’—

Asking a parent to stay calm and regulated while their child is dysregulated is like asking them to forget their entire emotional history in that moment.

Our responses to childrenโ€™s feelings have been socially and culturally conditioned. When we get frustrated with our children's emotions, it's often because our own emotional experiences were shaped by how our parents responded to us when we were young. If our feelings were dismissed, ignored, or met with frustration, we might have internalised the belief that emotionsโ€”especially big or messy onesโ€”are something to be avoided or โ€œfixed.โ€ These responses are often passed down through generations, ingrained in adults as they become parents themselves. So, when our child is experiencing big feelings, we might find ourselves reacting in ways that mirror the frustration we experienced growing upโ€”because it feels familiar, even if itโ€™s not helpful.

Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s so important we give ourselves grace when struggling to stay regulated in the face of our childrenโ€™s feelings. I talk a lot about co-regulation, but the truth is, weโ€™re human, and we can only do so much with what weโ€™ve got in the heat of the moment.

Youโ€™re doing the best you can ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒŸ Understanding Coregulation: Coregulation, the process of one person regulating another's emotions, is a vital aspect of child development. When a child is in distress, especially after displaying unacceptable behavior, offering soothing and support is crucial for several reasons.

๐Ÿง  Promoting Emotional Development: Comforting a child helps them feel safe and secure, fostering trust in their caregivers. This trust is foundational for healthy attachment and emotional development, teaching children that their emotions are valid and manageable.

๐Ÿš€ Building Emotional Skills: Additionally, coregulation helps children learn to regulate their own emotions over time. By observing caregivers respond calmly and compassionately to their distress, children learn effective emotion regulation strategies. This skill is essential for managing emotions in a socially acceptable manner and is a key aspect of emotional intelligence.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Encouraging Growth: Coregulation is essential for fostering a child's sense of safety, trust, and emotional intelligence. By soothing a child's distress, even following inappropriate behavior, we affirm that their feelings are always valid.

This approach creates a foundation for reflection on behavior, enabling them to consider alternative choices, make amends if necessary, and approach future situations differently. Through this process, children learn not only to manage their emotions but also to navigate social interactions with empathy and understanding.

Hello Parents & Carers,

I work as a Wellbeing Officer at a local school and run my own business as a Counsellor & Yoga teacher.

My passion is to help our young people create healthy minds to create healthy lives. As a parent, I am fully aware of the screen addiction that we are all battling. We all know the repercussions of this on our children's mental, emotional and physical health. Their nervous systems are not able to rest & reset and this increases anxiety and variety of mental and emotional issues.

I will be running a FINDING BALANCE WORKSHOP on Friday 12th April to encourage connection back to their bodies and to calm their brains and nervous systems.

The group is limited to 10 people ages 10-14 years and will run from 9am - 1pm and the cost is $130.
I am based in Duncraig.
Please let me know if you would like to book a space.

Warm regards,
Beck Mindz - Counselling and Family Therapy for Anxious Children
