“You seem fine.”

High functioning depression can be difficult to recognise because, on the surface, life may appear to be going well.

👉Many people continue to maintain work responsibilities, friendships, and daily routines, while privately struggling with low mood, exhaustion, or a persistent sense of heaviness.

In clinical psychology, this is sometimes referred to as masked depression. The outward functioning can make it harder for others, and sometimes even the individual themselves, to recognise that something deeper may be going on.

Depression does not always present as obvious sadness. It can also show up as constant fatigue, loss of enjoyment, irritability, or feeling emotionally flat, even while life continues to move forward.

Speaking with a clinical psychologist can help people better understand these experiences and begin working through them in a supportive and structured way.

One of the most common questions people ask before starting therapy is: How many sessions will I need?🗓️

The answer can vary widely depending on your concerns, your goals, and the therapeutic approach being used. Some people may experience meaningful change after a small number of sessions, while others benefit from longer term work with their psychologist.

Therapy is a collaborative process. Throughout treatment, you and your psychologist will regularly review your progress and adjust the approach where needed so that the work continues to support your goals.

For many people in Australia, therapy may also be accessed through a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). This referral is prepared by a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician and allows eligible patients to receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year.

If you’re considering therapy and would like to learn more about how the process works, appointments can be booked online via our website.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence based psychological therapy used to help people process traumatic memories and distressing experiences.

After trauma, memories can sometimes feel as though they remain “stuck” in the nervous system, leading to intrusive thoughts, emotional distress, or strong physical reactions when reminders appear.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories, allowing them to be integrated in a way that reduces their emotional impact.

EMDR is recognised internationally as an effective treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is increasingly used to support people experiencing trauma related anxiety, depression, phobias, and other difficulties.

At Canopy, EMDR is delivered by trained clinical psychologists in a safe, supportive, and collaborative therapeutic environment.

If you’re interested in learning more about EMDR therapy or would like to speak with one of our psychologists, appointments are available privately or with a GP referral.

It’s okay to not be okay.

Working with a clinical psychologist can provide a supportive space to talk through what you’re experiencing and begin making sense of it.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists support individuals across a range of life challenges and mental health concerns.
Appointments are available privately or with a GP referral, and online bookings are available through our website.

Improving and maintaining your mental health doesn’t require major life changes.🧠

Seeing a clinical psychologist isn’t only for when you’re in crisis or seeking a potential diagnosis.

👉Many people seek support regularly to better understand patterns in their thoughts, emotions, and relationships, or to navigate periods of change, stress, or uncertainty. The great thing about our sessions is they can be as often as you like, or simply when things come up in life that you may like some support working through or processing.

Clinical psychologists are trained to work with a wide range of concerns using evidence-based approaches, tailoring treatment to each person’s needs and circumstances.

Clinical psychology can provide a safe and confidential space for you to discuss your concerns, receive support, and develop skills to manage life’s challenges.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a well-researched mental health condition that can develop following exposure to trauma. 🍃

It can happen when the nervous system remains in a heightened state long after a traumatic event has passed, which can in turn affect sleep, mood, relationships, and a person’s sense of safety in everyday life.

Psychological treatment for PTSD is evidence-based and carefully structured, with a strong focus on safety, stabilisation, and recovery. Many people experience meaningful improvement with the right support.

If you or someone you know might be struggling with this, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with your GP and request a referral to us. You can also book an appointment with us directly (no referral required). 🤍

Valentine’s Day can be a difficult time for many people.

Feelings of loneliness, grief, or disconnection often become more noticeable around holidays that emphasise relationships and togetherness.

👉From a clinical psychology perspective, these experiences are not a sign that something is “wrong”. They often reflect increased social comparison, unmet expectations, or reminders of past experiences. For some, this can affect mood, anxiety levels, or overall wellbeing.

🧠Psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and compassion focused approaches can support people to understand these responses, reduce self criticism, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

If this time of year brings up things you’d like support with, our clinical psychologists are available to help.

If you’ve ever caught yourself scrolling without meaning to, comparing your life to everyone else’s, or feeling flat after spending too much time on your phone, you’re not alone.📲🤳

🧠Our brains aren’t wired for constant stimulation, comparison, and notifications. Over time, this can leave us feeling drained, distracted, and more disconnected from ourselves than we realise.

This digital detox bingo isn’t about giving up your phone or doing everything at once. It’s simply a collection of small, realistic changes that can help reduce screen time, interrupt doom scrolling, and create more breathing space in your day.

👉Even one small shift can help improve mood, focus, sleep, and how present you feel. You don’t need to “play bingo” or complete the whole chart. Pick one square. Try it once. See how it feels.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists often support people to build healthier relationships with technology, especially when scrolling starts to affect self esteem, mood, or daily life.
Sometimes, the first step is just noticing and making one small change.

Clinical Psychology appointments are available across our Perth locations and online. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or book your session online now.

Back to work blues can show up in subtle ways.📉🗄️

Low motivation. Heavy mornings. Short patience. A sense of dread you didn’t expect after time off. For many people, this isn’t about disliking their work, it’s their nervous system adjusting.

Here are a few small things that can genuinely help if you’re struggling with this:

• don’t expect full productivity straight away. Be kind to yourself as you ease back in
• anchor your day with one predictable routine
• break tasks into “start here” steps, not full to do lists
• get outside before or after work to reset your nervous system
• limit scrolling at night so your brain can properly wind down

If this feeling fades after a week or two, that’s normal. If it lingers, worsens, or starts to affect sleep or mood, it’s worth paying attention.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists work with people navigating work stress, burnout, anxiety, and low mood, helping them find practical ways to cope and regain balance.
