Learn Mindfulness with us - www.calmingminds.com.au
Mindfulness is an intentional focus on one’s thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in the present moment. Mindfulness targets becoming more aware of, rather than reacting to, one’s situation and choices. Eating mindfully means that you are using all of your physical and emotional senses to experience and enjoy the food choices you make. This helps to increase gratitude for food, which can improve the overall eating experience. Mindful eating encourages one to make choices that will be satisfying and nourishing to the body. However, it discourages “judging” one’s eating behaviours as there are different types of eating experiences. As we become more aware of our eating habits, we may take steps towards behaviour changes that will benefit ourselves and our environment.

Meditation brings so much clarity to a situation. It strips away all of the distractions and background noise. You’re simply left to analyze your options as best you can and make the most informed decision possible. It allows time to process and ultimately move forward with confidence in your choice—no matter how big or small.

Meditation is a powerful practice to counter overthinking and relax the mind. By cultivating awareness in the present-moment and focusing on the breath or bodily sensations, overthinkers can break free from the cycle of excessive thinking and find a deeper sense of relaxation and inner calm. Now more than ever, you might find yourself experiencing more anxiety, more worry and more stress. The breath is a portable self-care tool that is always available to help you reduce and relieve these feelings. It can be a doorway to mindfulness—defined as “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations.”

This simple exercise can relieve anxiety and help you to feel more calm:

Take a deep breath in through your nose.
Part your lips and exhale from the mouth with a gentle sigh.
Do that two more times.
Deep breaths in, long breaths out.
Once you have completed this breathing cycle, take a moment to assess its effect. How do you feel? What do you notice? Do you feel a bit more calm and at ease in your body?

Doing nothing feels like the complete opposite of being productive, but after you’ve tried it you will see how effective it can be.

A lot of people say that they are too busy to do nothing. Yet those same people will happily invest hours in front of the television, or spend plenty of time fretting and worrying about something without allowing themselves the pleasure to just be.

I’ve noticed that an hour slumped in front of the TV feels very different than one hour sitting in the park.

Actually, doing nothing can be a great investment into your personal well-being and something worth making time for.

It doesn’t take a huge change in your lifestyle—perhaps just a change in your thinking—and once you experience the benefits you will be more likely to make it a regular part of your schedule.

Meditation is a great way to rest your body and mind.

Learn how to engage your Relaxation Response with us - www.calmingminds.com.au

The term "Relaxation Response" was coined by Dr. Herbert Benson, professor, author, cardiologist, and founder of Harvard’s Mind/Body Medical Institute. The response is defined as your personal ability to encourage your body to release chemicals and brain signals that make your muscles and organs slow down and increase blood flow to the brain.

The Relaxation Response is essentially the opposite reaction to the “fight or flight” response. According to Dr. Benson, using the Relaxation Response is beneficial, as it counteracts the physiological effects of stress and the fight or flight response.

The fight-or-flight stress response occurs naturally when we perceive that we are under excessive pressure, and it is designed to protect us from bodily harm. Our sympathetic nervous system becomes immediately engaged in creating a number of physiological changes, including increased metabolism, blood pressure, heart and breathing rate, dilation of pupils, constriction of our blood vessels, all of which work to enable us to fight or flee from a stressful or dangerous situation.

It is common for individuals experiencing the fight-or-flight response to describe uncomfortable physiological changes like muscle tension, headache, upset stomach, racing heartbeat, and shallow breathing. The fight-or-flight response can become harmful when elicited frequently. When high levels of stress hormones are secreted often, they can contribute to a number of stress-related medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, GI diseases, adrenal fatigue, and more.

Take a Mindful Moment, it's good for your health - www.calmingminds.com.au
One of the benefits of integrating Mindfulness practices, not only at specific times, when the external stimulations are reduced, but also in short breaks throughout the day, is precisely switching off automatic pilot.
Short conscious moments, with one or two breaths that are more intentional, typically before starting new tasks or moving between them, can be reviving and bring focus. It relates to refining the way we are in our daily tasks.

The benefits go beyond attention. We become more aware of our cognitive side, that is, our ability to relate healthily to our flow of thoughts and to physiological experiences such as stress. Once stress is perceived as a bodily phenomenon, it is possible to re-establish balance by, for example, using mindfulness practices.

Silencing the mind does not mean that you totally stop thinking. It means that you think when you need to think, but keep the mind calm and silent when you don’t need to think.
Here’s a look at some solid reasons to get quiet.
Silence may help your health in several ways, including:

lowering blood pressure
improving concentration and focus

Mindfulness is simply the process by which we come to notice that our thoughts are mental events that we have a choice about. They aren't necessarily The Truth. When we start noticing, pausing, and asking if these thoughts are truly helpful or useful, then we get to choose.

Smiling increases mood-enhancing hormones while decreasing stress-enhancing hormones, including cortisol, and adrenaline. It also reduces overall blood pressure. And because you typically smile when you're happy, the muscles used trigger your brain to produce more endorphins—the chemical that relieves pain and stress.

One form of meditation, known as mindfulness meditation, can control and reduce stress caused by cyclical or negative thinking. Practicing this form of meditation generally involves staying still, becoming observant of one’s mind, and trying to notice each thought, emotion, and sensation without judgment.

By learning to stay with and observe various thoughts and emotions as they arise, we may not only become aware of unconscious scripts that play in our minds but also learn to identify negative or false beliefs about ourselves and the world. Meditators may also become more compassionate and at peace with their own emotions.

When someone practices meditation and cultivates sensitivity toward their subjective experiences, they may find the answer to important internal questions, become more self-aware, and develop a tolerant attitude towards themselves and others.

Ego says, “Once everything falls into place, I’ll feel peace.” Spirit says, “Find your peace, and then everything will fall into place.” ~ Marianne Williamson

YES! This is why being able to easily access the Flow States we know we have — plus create new ones — is essential to living and growing our peace and happiness.

Flow States elevate our inner and outer game at the same time.

It's time to make a change! Mental health breaks provide sanctuary from the stimuli that exhaust us. Like a phone low on battery, our minds need intermittent recharging. Short meditations, screen-free afternoons, and the occasional devices-down vacation offer invaluable chances to de-stress.

Learn to be in the moment with us - www.calmingminds.com.au

It’s nice to set aside time for mindfulness practice. But did you know that any ordinary moment – including sitting with a coffee – can be the perfect time?

What Is Mindfulness?
The folks at Greater Good have a nice definition of mindfulness: “Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens.” It’s about accepting the moment as it is, without judging it as right or wrong.

In other words, we’re tuned in and accepting of what’s going on right now – not in some future time, or in some past state. Now.

When we bring our awareness to the present moment, we become more responsive to life, and less reactive. We act less out of emotions such as rage or anger, and get in touch with the calmer side of who we are.

When we’re grounded in the moment … centered … and we practice doing it daily, we can better assess situations for what they really are, and accept ourselves for who we really are. And that can have huge benefits on our physical and emotional wellbeing. It may even change our brains and lead to greater happiness.
