Wrapping up our BakeWest 20-year celebration

🏆 Best Cake for Regional and Support Services (RSS)

Congratulations to Bridget de Bijl (RSS, Bunbury), whose winning creation featured vanilla cupcakes topped with Biscoff buttercream, beautifully decorated with miniature PathWest elements – blood films, agar plates, Heparin tubes, and Vitros slides – showcasing the diverse work across RSS. The design also incorporated the PathWest logo and our 2005–2025 20-year anniversary theme.

🏆 Overall Winner

Congratulations to Abi Hague (FSH Network Specimen Collection), who received the most votes with her stunning tribute to the vital role of phlebotomists – the first point of co in ntact in a patient’s diagnostic journey. The arm undergoing venepuncture symbolises the start of testing, where skill, empathy, and care set the tone for accurate outcomes. Featuring 20 handmade vials to mark 20 years of PathWest, this cake honours the dedication of our specimen collection teams. Kay Stone (Forensic Pathology) came in second with her creative cake illustrating the PathWest journey, and Monica Kemp (Immunology) came in third with her pathology request–themed cake.

Thank you to all teams who participated in PathWest’s BakeWest and made this milestone celebration extra special.

Today, our 20-year celebrations continued at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH).

During our celebrations, we reflected on the key moments that have shaped our 20-year journey. We also held PathWest’s BakeWest cake competition, with live voting at the FSH morning tea. The winning cake, crafted by the FSH Specimen Collection, featured the message ‘PathWest starts with phlebotomy’ alongside a hand reaching toward a test tube — a fitting tribute to the essential role our collectors play in the patient journey.

Check out all the amazing creations from today, and see the video of the winning cake in our next post. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and brought such creativity and joy to this milestone event.

🎉 Celebrating 20 years of PathWest at QEII

Today we marked two decades of PathWest with a special morning tea at QEII, attended by the Department of Health Director General, Dr Shirley Bowen, our Chief Executive Dr Narelle Hadlow, Board Chair Angie Paskevicius, and staff from across PathWest.

As part of the celebrations, we looked back at key milestones from our 20-year journey. We also held PathWest’s BakeWest cake competition, with live voting at the morning tea. The winning cake from Forensic Pathology beautifully represented our evolution from the PathCentre to PathWest – honouring our past and celebrating our future.

Check out all the amazing creations from today, and see the video of the winning cake in our next post. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and brought such creativity and joy to this milestone event.

✨ Celebrating 20 years of PathWest

Starting today, we’re marking a very special milestone - 20 years since PathWest was established as Western Australia’s unified public pathology and forensic service.

On 15 July 2005, PathWest officially brought together PathCentre and the laboratories of Royal Perth, Fremantle, King Edward Memorial and Princess Margaret Hospitals, creating a single statewide service dedicated to delivering high-quality, safe and reliable pathology for the people of Western Australia.

🗓 Check out our milestones through the years in our timeline, and join us in celebrating this week.

🎉 If you’re at Fiona Stanley Hospital or Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital from 14 to 18 July, pop by our stalls to learn more about our work — and stay tuned for more updates on our celebrations.

Recognising the collaborative efforts of PathWest’s Forensic Biology Department and the Western Australia Police Force in a major cold case breakthrough.

A 52-year-old man has been sentenced to over 20 years in prison for a series of violent sexual assaults committed in the 1990s – thanks to the use of Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) in Western Australia.

More than 30 years later, using ground-breaking IGG techniques and the expertise of PathWest’s Forensic Biology Department, the investigation was able to progress and Michael Anthony Woodhall was identified as the suspect.

Woodhall later pleaded guilty to 16 serious offences. This was the first time IGG was used in a criminal investigation in Australia to help identify a suspect and formally charge them with a crime.
