It’s International Day of the Midwife today, which feels like a very good time to say something that probably doesn’t get said enough:
Midwives are extraordinary.
Not in an inspirational quote kind of way — but in a very real, very practical, “holding it all together when everything is on the line” kind of way.
The 2026 theme, “One Million More Midwives,” isn’t just a slogan. It’s a pretty stark reminder that we don’t have enough of the people who quite literally hold the beginning of life in their hands. And somehow, despite that, midwives keep showing up — in hospitals, in regional towns, in remote communities — working as deeply skilled experts, doing deeply human work, often under pressure most people never see.
They advocate when it matters. They provide care that is equal parts clinical expertise and genuine humanity — which is a harder balance than it sounds. And they keep doing it, even when the system around them is under strain — and sometimes can feel a bit broken.
At Kenmore Health Recruitment, we see how critical midwives are — especially when it comes to making sure women in regional and remote Australia can continue to access quality maternity care.
So today isn’t about over-polished praise. It’s about recognising a workforce that is highly skilled, essential, and central to all of our futures.
To every midwife: we see you, we value you, and we’re very glad you’re there.
