On 10 June 2025, significant amendments to the Family Law Act 1975 came into force, changing how courts determine property settlements, including how pets are considered in property splits. The reforms are designed to make the division of property and finances safer, simpler, and fairer for separating families, particularly where family violence is present.

When it comes to relationships outside of marriage, Australian law recognises several categories—most notably, de facto and interdependent relationships. Although these terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday conversation, they have distinct meanings and legal implications. Understanding these differences is important for anyone navigating relationship rights, property division, or government entitlements.

The two are treated differently in the Family Court.

I know several brave women who've battled breast cancer. I've been feeling very sluggish in the winter down here in Denmark in the Great Southern so decided for the survivors and those who lost their battle, for the wonderful people who research new treatments and cures, and for the betterment of my own health I have undertaken to move a bit more in August. I'm sure this will pledge will incentivise me to get out and walk whatever the weather.
If you are in a position to make a donation to this worthy cause, I would love your support.

This August, I am taking part in Step Up to Breast Cancer to raise vital funds for breast cancer research. Please support me!
