Supporting your health with foods and phytonutrients, if we think of foods as chemical messengers, helping transport vital messages to our bodies so it can function optimally.
A dear friend runs a program incorporating 9 cups of veggies per day for 9 days.
As its the start of spring- what a better way to start!

I love this simple tool- after meeting Dr Terry Wahls a few years ago- she reversed her debilitating MS diagnosis by incorporating 9 cups of veggies per day. This is what I teach my clients to add in more goodness every day can have a huge impact (without removing anything) on your health. We can always start with 6 cups as lots of people think -OMG- 9 cups! It's easier than you think.

Veggies help sweep the gut with fibre, phytonutrients, water, minerals, antioxidants. However, if you are suffering from gut issues increasing your veggie intake can cause your gut some discomfort. This is why it is so important to make sure you have effective stomach acid, good bowel movements (more veggies will help with this) and chew your food to help breakdown and supply your stomach with enzymes.

I use organic vegetables to lessen the toxic load on my liver and overall system, I only grow a few vegetables at home, this is still very satisfying to head into the garden and cut some gigantic silverbeet!

Following on from my post last week, along with changes to my metabolism entering into menopause, injuries, joint issues and my thyroid (the only half I had left) giving up on me finally, I suffered with chronic fatigue- if any of you have had any major chronic health conditions or cancer you will know your mind immediately goes to - "Is it cancer again?"

After doing many tests- my functional GP recommended a Lyme Borrelia test (when they were available here in Australia- they aren't now) and it came back with an active diagnosis of Lyme Disease.
Which surprised me! It was 2021 and I had a lot of stress, along with the global stress going on at the time, moving house and businesses, navigating loss and traumas within family dynamics. I had also struggled to keep my vitamin D levels high- even with all the sun I get and taking supplements.

Living here in Perth, I had always been camping, bush walking and out in nature in general. The only time I remember have any weird type rash (from a tick I realise now) was before I had children over 24 years ago.
Another deeper dive into why this would occur so latent is with many stealth infections they hide in a biofilm, and when your immunes system is lowered enough- BAM- out come the little stealth spirochetes and start drilling into your tissues! πŸͺ±

I felt another fight of my life coming up- as I know how detrimental Lyme can be causing neurological and many other chronic ailments.
I am not going to lie- it was a scary time, I felt absolutely on death's door. I researched- and ruling out going to Mexico or the US for treatments or ordering bees to sting me ( I just couldn't do it to the bees! 🐝). I went back to my herbs. These saved me- again! There were many other therapies- infrared light every morning from my home panel, colonics, resting (not that great at- but have learnt to master it), sun, detoxing, detoxing, detoxing, lots of supplements, more changes to my diet, gentle slow exercise and movement (which was polar opposite to what I had been loving with triathlons) and healing trauma.

Life certainly hasn't let me off when it comes to having chronic health conditions, I have learnt to embrace these and heal myself with the help of some amazing friends and practitioners. I was able to heal Lyme and get back to a "menopausal" balance at the time. I believe that with the hormone decline, stress, global unrest, moving, and more emotional stress my body was in a perfect storm to reveal the underlying cause which was hiding for 24 years! This has lead me to believe that it is ALWAYS worth trusting your gut if you don't feel well - but all your bloods are "normal". πŸ₯°

Some things you may not know about me and why my love for natural medicine is a calling rather than a job πŸ₯°
I grew up in the late 60's on a property in the swan valley, so being outdoors is in my bones. I was a very active child and mum put me into dance classes to burn off some of my energy!
My passion for dance and movement became embedded and I was lucky enough to dance on stage in Perth, professionally with the Kalika Dance company, dance in India and the UK and learn multiple martial arts, then later in life participate in triathlons. My hairdressing career started in my teens and still (to this day) cut my Mums hair πŸ₯°

In the 80's with all those toxic hair chemicals, dance parties, exploring and adventuring out in the world, travelling to India to study dance, visiting family in America and then living in the UK, I decided to settle down and study Naturopathy. Settle down= meaning- performing in the dance company, studying, helping my friend open & work in a hair salon, start scuba diving as a hobby!
I eventually burnt out and was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma- BOOM- age 29.
Here was the start of my deeper dive into why this happened- and the realisation I needed to survive as I hadn't finished my story!

My love of detoxing/fasting begins- and I still actively detox/fast 2-3 times per year. As this was a key part in my recovery, it definitely helped save my life. Removed all toxic products from my home, skincare, personal care and cleaning products. Ate cleaner, organic and wholefoods.
Our bodies are a sponge, and if we fill them too much- without the ability to self squeeze- we need to give them a hand. Using easy equipment at home, along with eating well, moving, actively detoxing keeps my body from building up chemicals that are wrought in our environments today.

Hence my love of finding the root causes to your presenting concerns and foods as medicine. Some simple lifestyle factors and changes can be added or removed, movement incorporated and foods that heal rather than build up toxic effects in the body is a great first step to better health. ✨

Diet really is one of the most controllable and powerful tools you can use to create better health outcomes for you and your family.
This is always my first approach- food first- is the foundations for better health.

One of my favourite Doctors that I follow is so aligned with how I practice as a Naturopath. He suggests interviewing your GP to see if they are a good fit for you πŸ˜‚ I love that! Instead, a large majority of people believe what the Doctor tells them as gospel. With a world that has a high number of obese people and climbing, thinking this is the norm, overeating and undernourished is NOT the way to feeling healthy or being healthy.
Each year or so, the labs can change the reference ranges, that's because the reference ranges are for the 95% of people that fall between those numbers. So, if we have a large population of obese, sick people... then the lab references are about those people???

As a Functional Naturopath we look at your blood work, and look for Optimal range, Doctors tend to wait until you are out of reference range then can treat the disease. Naturopathy is about preventive care and treating the underlying cause & finding the underlying causes, this may take time, some conditions are a quicker fix than others.
How long did it take you to feel out of balance?

Our body is a whole system, and we need to treat it as one. Unfortunately, diet is not enough anymore- Food really is medicine- but you have to make the changes and EAT well. With our soils being deficient, our agriculture and farming using toxic sprays and feeds, our lives being more stressful- being in flight or fight more than rest & repair- not enough sun and vitamin D- (unless you have 20 minutes per day to run around naked in the sun), exposure to more toxins in the environment, then we need certain minerals and vitamins for optimal health and longevity.
If you don't know where to start or are sick of your doctor saying you are normal, when you don't feel it, book an appointment with me πŸ₯°

After spending most of last week in Sydney, which was amazing with all the learning on my favourite subjects like autism, MCAS, CIRS, lyme, PANS, and how we can better help our children and community.
Along with connecting with practitioners from all over the world and a special Integrative GP who I work closely with, we may have some special announcements soon! Stay tuned ! πŸ˜€
I definitely felt the effects of being inside a hotel room with carpet, no shower filter, no water filter and no fresh air at night! Along with being inside all day for the lectures, with flourescent lights and no outdoor area to escape to. My body is sensitive to my environment.
This was a big takeaway for me from the weekend, if you are still in an environment with mould, toxins or things that trigger you, your healing won't be complete. This along with diet, nervous system regulation, healing trauma, are all huge markers of correcting your health.
I feel so much better with being back in my routine, getting morning sunshine , sleeping better, drinking better quality water & now to detox a bit deeper!
Coming up- coffee enemas, broth fasting and my winter wellness program.
Anyone care to join me on a 10 day winter reset?

Calming Support for Your Nervous System

As a naturopath, I find immense value in using herbs to support overall health. Derived from nature, these plants contain a wealth of compounds that can help bring balance to our bodies. Thats why I use trusted product companies like Herbal Extract and Biomedica to provide me with high quality practitioner products.

Research from various human and animal studies indicates that herbal medicines can positively influence our stress response system (HPA axis function), help calm overactive receptors (GABA), and offer benefits for those experiencing anxiety and sleep disturbances.

Stress is a natural response to perceived challenges, whether environmental or emotional. Ideally, our bodies should be able to return to a state of equilibrium after a stressful event. However, when stress becomes prolonged and coping mechanisms are ineffective, this response can persist, potentially leading to heightened emotional states like anxiety and insomnia.

Fortunately, several herbs, including holy basil, magnolia, zizyphus, kudzu, and passionflower, have demonstrated significant benefits in research, showing reductions (in some cases up to 80%) in insomnia, anxiety, and fatigue.

If you're looking for natural support to feel your best, please book an appointment with me.

I have been meeting lots of new clients lately, and I am surprised at how many people have never been to a Naturopath.
We are often the "last resort", which is such a shame, some people believe we are too expensive, or can't afford to see us, I hope to clear up why we are worth you taking the time.

You may have already spent time and money at GP's (which isn't really free, some now charge $80 for 10 minutes), for them to tell you your blood work is fine, there is nothing wrong; other specialists they can charge on average $400, x-rays, MRI's, medications costs, your own costs on self medicating of supplements etc etc.
One consultation may cost the same or less for what you might spend on a meal out, one night with a loved one.

It comes down to priority, putting your health first. We have been professionally trained, studied very hard, for many years to be able to understand how and what we need to focus on to discover the root cause to your problems, not just treat your symptoms. To stay registered we have to comply with professional standards and ongoing professional development points. Not all Naturopaths are the same, we treat clients differently, for me, food comes first and lifestyle factors, if you are found to be deficient supplements can definitely help or herbal tonics.

My Initial consultations involve a thorough history taking (approx 75mins) current presenting symptoms, health goals, timelines, assessing blood work and history results. Then I devise a treatment plan and email all of my findings, suggestions, plus add any links I think you may need, or referrals, or recipes. We then follow up within 3 weeks- then monthly if needed.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, plus all of my own life experiences with chronic health issues, and my family health issues some of these involve: cancer, autoimmune thyroid issues, Lyme disease, Asthma, ADHD, ASD, eczema, chronic anxiety, peri/menopause. One consultation may cost the same or less for what you might spend on a meal out one night with a loved one.
I also offer other holistic tools for your health goals, refer to other health professionals if you need them and support you on your journey.

The question should be- Can you afford NOT to see a Naturopath? πŸ₯°
