This week, the majestic sounds of a string quartet filled the air at Juniper Carramar in Morley. 🎵🎼🎶🎻👏

The group of talented West Australian Symphony Orchestra musicians performed a collection of beautiful melodies on violin, cello, and viola.

Thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, the stunning performance also offered an insight into being part of an orchestra and stories about some of the musician's favourite pieces.

A big thank you to WASO for sharing your love of music with us.

Juniper welcomes the Australian Government’s decision to release 20,000 additional Home Care Packages prior to 1 November and the start of the new Aged Care Act.

This is a positive and timely decision that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of thousands of older Australians who are waiting for essential care and support to remain safely and independently in their homes.

At Juniper, we see firsthand the impact home care services can have, not just on the individual, but on families, carers, and the wider community.

For many, access to the right supports at the right time can prevent unnecessary hospital visits, reduce isolation, and improve quality of life.

We are confident this announcement will go some way to easing pressure on the growing waitlist and respond to the very real needs of older people across the country.

We would like to applaud the collaborative efforts across Parliament and the advocacy within the aged care sector and broader community that together have helped bring about this positive outcome.

The Senate inquiry into delayed aged care reforms has uncovered some shocking truths.

The waitlist for home care packages is now more than double what we thought, with over 200,000 older Australians stuck in a system that can’t meet their needs.

Even more heartbreaking, nearly 5,000 people passed away last year while waiting for care.

This delay is putting even more pressure on WA’s health system, with older people occupying hospital beds meant for others and families and carers feeling the emotional and financial strain.

We are calling on the government to act swiftly to address this crisis and provide the care older Australians deserve.

It’s Women’s Health Week through to Friday 5 September! 💖💪🩺🎽🏃‍♀️👟

This year's theme is ‘Say yes to you’, encouraging women to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

Across the week, national not-for-profit organisation Jean Hailes for Women's Health is putting a spotlight on the following health topics for women:

Day 1 (September 1)
Understanding what’s normal for your body starts with regular health checks.

Day 2 (September 2)
Equip yourself with the right knowledge and tools to help you have confident and informed conversations with your doctor.

Day 3 (September 3)
Heart disease affects women in ways often overlooked. Look into the importance of heart health checks & learn the basics of blood pressure and cholesterol.

Day 4 (September 4)
Pain isn’t just ‘part of being a woman’ and you don’t have to push through it alone. Every woman deserves to be heard, understood & provided with proper health care.

Day 5 (September 5)
Whether you’re navigating the pressures of daily life or planning for the years ahead, looking after your mind is just as important as caring for your body.

At Juniper, we listen to the voices of older people — and we’re committed to ensuring they receive the care they deserve.

There are currently around 87,000 older Australians on the waitlist for desperately needed home care.

Tomorrow, there will be a Senate inquiry looking into the consequences of delaying the Support at Home program and the withholding of new Home Care Packages until 1 November.

In offering our recommendations to the inquiry, we’ve drawn upon 75 years’ experience empowering older Western Australians to hold onto their independence and identity as they journey into old age.

We see the inquiry as a vital opportunity to put older Australians and their care needs front and centre of public debate and hope it results in the immediate release of at least 20,000 Home Care Packages that are so urgently needed.

Without progress, the waitlist could grow to around 100,000 by November, leaving many older Australians waiting longer for support they rely on.

Finding accommodation in the regions is exceptionally difficult with low vacancy rates and high property prices often making it difficult to attract much needed aged care staff.

Juniper has set about trying to alleviate these challenges by building new staff housing near Bethshan Residential Aged Care Home in Katanning.

Our CEO Russell Bricknell spoke with Great Southern Breakfast this morning about what the accommodation means for both Bethshan staff and the Katanning community as a whole.

“It’s really hard to get good permanent housing in country towns at the moment because people are wanting to live in those locations,” Russell told presenter Paul Cook.

“Our focus is to provide housing that people feel comfortable in, so they are comfortable enough to make the community their home and stay in those services for a long period of time.”

Part-funded by Juniper and the Australian Government, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing under the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program this project follows the recent announcement of new permanent accommodation being built in Fitzroy Crossing and forms part of a broader Juniper program to offer housing to regional staff.

You can hear Russell’s chat on Great Southern Breakfast here.

The amazing Hugs and Stitches group at Juniper Chrystal Halliday Retirement Living in Karrinyup has sewn up another impressive donation for local charities. 🧵🪡🧶

After hosting a stall at North Beach Shopping Centre on the weekend - selling a huge array of hand-crafted items including aprons, children’s clothing and crocheted rugs - the group raised $1064.

The proceeds from this latest fundraiser will support several local charities including Grand Carers WA.

For the past 15 years, the busy craft group of Juniper Chrystal Halliday residents and friends has offered a social outlet to knit, chat and enjoy a cuppa each Thursday. ☕🍵☕🍵

What an incredible effort. 🙌👏🙌👏

Our conversations around the disparity of aged care support in WA compared to the rest of the county have been making headlines across the state.

After featuring in The West Australian yesterday, our CEO Russell Bricknell spoke to WA Mornings with Nadia Mitsopoulos and was on ABC News last night, calling for an urgent need to fix the inequity.

Data shows WA is falling alarmingly behind when it comes to the number of Home Care Packages and Commonwealth Home Support Program services available per 1,000 older people – the lowest number of any state or territory - and residential care for Western Australians.

Russell spoke to the ABC about what this means not only for older Western Australians – and their families - but an already stretched hospital system.

Around 250 hospital beds a day in WA are currently being used by people who are eligible for home care or residential care while the state recorded its highest-ever ambulance ramping figures in July.

“If you look at the way aged care places are allocated to WA, the responsibility lies with the Prime Minister,” Russell told Nadia.

“WA has the lowest provision rate of home care services and residential services in the country. There are on average 43 Home Care Packages for every 1,000 people over the age of 75 while other states are up in the 60s. There’s a huge difference and yet we are up to 11% of the country’s population.

“WA has also, for a long time, not had enough aged care beds. Our building stock in WA is getting old. We have facilities built in the 50s and 60s that no longer meet today’s need. Providers are keeping them running because we need to have beds for people but if you can’t build and replace, we are going to get a bigger problem come down the road.”
