Nurturing mothers and their children

Pregnancy | Postpartum EDUCATOR

I love to research and learn new things.

MOTHER

Motherhood is a time of massive transformation - it challenges us to grow and change - to learn more about ourselves - who we are as women and as mothers. I have been a mother for over 21 years and in this time, I have learned that one of the most important things we can be as mothers, is EMPOWERED. As mothers, we are always seeking to learn and understand our children better. When we are

empowered by knowledge, skills and confidence, we trust that we are making the best decisions for our family. I am far from the ‘perfect’ mother, but I am good enough, and that is my gift to my children. NUTRITIONIST

After struggling for years with postnatal depression & anxiety, weight gain, food cravings and fatigue, and supposedly doing “all the right things”, I decided it was time to take a different path. This led me to study a Bachelor of Health Science in Nutritional Medicine where I not only learned about the impact that gut health has on our overall health and wellbeing, but how incredible the human body is and all that it does for us. Nutrition is not simply about food, but also our relationship with it and our body. I believe creating a practice around this also informs our children so that they too can develop a positive relationship with food and their body. NURTURER

For as long as I can remember, I have looked after people. But when I became a mother, my nurturing kicked into overdrive and I made this my purpose. It took me a while to really value this as a strength as it is so often not valued in our society. I believe that the best way to care for our children, is to nurture their mothers. My purpose is to support mothers so that they can reconnect with themselves in order to raise healthy, happy children. I delve in deeply when I feel called to really understand something. But while I love to know the ins and out of things like nutritional biochemistry, I know that not everyone holds this passion. So I take evidence-based research & complex theory and interpret it in a way that makes it easy to understand and put into action (I've been told this is my super power...). I continue to research and learn all I can on pregnancy, postpartum and children’s health and wellbeing. GUIDE

Motherhood can be overwhelming. The responsibility, the mental load, the sheer number of things we need to learn about and get done. As mothers, we often take on the main role of deciding what and how our family eats. We do the research, we learn or develop the skills, we do the trial and error. We also do the bulk of the worrying…

As a practitioner, my role is not simply to educate, but to guide and support you to make informed decisions for your family’s health and wellbeing. So that’s me... I hope I can be of some help in your motherhood journey. Please reach out, I'd love to connect.

I am sharing this on behalf of a fellow psychology student.

‘We are seeking mothers aged 18 years and over with one or more child/ren (age of the child/ren to be 18 years or younger) to share information about the mental load since becoming a mother, by participating in the research project identified below. ‘

Fatigue is something that most women struggle with every day. You wake up tired, rely on caffeine and sugar to get through the day, then need a nap by 3pm.

Mothering can be exhausting in itself, then there's the mental load of running a home, having a social life, work outside mothering and doing it all on broken sleep and the crusts of our children's toast.

We also tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the “perfect mother”. Making sure our kids are dressed in clean clothes, are doing well at school, aren’t having too much screen time, are eating all their veggies... you know what I’m talking about.

Simply trying to avoid the constant judgement that comes with motherhood is exhausting and we can feel as though we’re drowning.

So while I won’t pretend that getting your bounce back is as simple as just following the four suggestions below, doing these things regularly can help you to stay afloat while you work on the underlying causes of your fading energy.

So here we go.

1. Eat protein at every meal 🍗

2. Move your body daily 🚶‍♀️

3. Limit caffeine intake ☕

4. Drink more water 🫗

Are you struggling to get out of bed in the morning after getting up multiple times in the night?

Maybe you're eating the crusts of your kid's toast and telling yourself you've eaten today?

When was the last time you went to the bathroom alone?

Have you drunk anything other than coffee today?

All these roads lead to burnout...

And I get it, it can be really hard to fit in any kind of nourishing food or exercise or "self-care" when you're busy raising kids. I have 3, I get it!

So let me help you make it a little easier.

Join me throughout August for "Nurturing You"

Each week I will share a bite-sized tips you can add to your days without being overwhelmed with a whole life overhaul.

You're exhausted. Touched out. Overwhelmed.

The last thing you need is to hear is how important "self-care" is.

We get it, we know!

But a massage or a long shower is not going to "fix" this level of burn out and telling us this can just feel like another thing we can feel crap about not doing.

So instead of all that BS... I invite you to join me in the Mother Nurture Collective.

For the month of August, I'm going to be running "Nurturing You".

Each week, I'll be providing bite-sized and achievable tips for nurturing your well-being.

It's not a program or a course. There's no commitment or expectations. And it's free!

I promise I'm not going to try and sell you anything at the end either.

It's just simple things that you can choose (or not) to incorporate into your days to help reconnect with yourself in this busy season of motherhood.

So join me and other mums just like you in the Mother Nurture Collective so we can all support each other.

Burping is part of the routinised, sleep-training approach to infant care so popular in the West. Burping after feeds rouses a baby’s nervous system, which fits with the (mistaken) idea that you’re not supposed to let your baby fall asleep with the breast or bottle so that you avoid ‘bad sleep habits’. But it is biologically normal for babies to dial down into a relaxed and sleepy state due to the neurohormonal effects of milk and mealtime. Letting babies fall asleep with feeds doesn’t set up bad sleep habits, despite what you may hear.

Burping babies doesn’t help them sleep better, either. It’s normal for babies to wake every couple of hours at night into toddlerhood (see my post on night waking). If your baby wakes the minute you put them down during the day, it’s not because of gas or wind: it’s because a tiny nap took the edge of their rising sleep pressure, which was all they needed, and now they’re ready for more day-time sensory adventure! If they wake every hour or more for whole parts of the night, it’s not because of gas or wind: it’s because their sleep pattern is disrupted. If your little one grunts and groans and writhes half the night, so that you can hardly sleep, it’s not because of gas or wind: it’s because their sleep pressure is no longer high (their circadian clock is disrupted). In these cases, we must work with their biological sleep regulators to make the nights easier.

Rousing up out of sleep activates the gut, which is why your baby might pass flatulence or puke or burp with all that grunting and groaning in the night. The gut is like a second brain, highly innervated, and when a baby rouses, you’ll often notice gut events. These can be ignored.

We don’t need to burp or hold the baby upright – or swaddle for that matter. And try not to change their nappy unless you absolutely have to. Doing these things in the night can be a recipe for severe sleep deprivation. All the new neuroscience, gut science, and lactation science tell us that life with a baby can be easier than you hear. Not burping your baby is one important way of making the days and nights as enjoyable as possible.

I am writing some new articles for my website and I'd love to find out what you want to know about nutrition for pregnancy and/or postpartum.

Maybe it's what foods you should avoid (lots of myths out there!) or perhaps key foods for each trimester.

Or maybe you're more interested in how nutrition can support your mental health during pregnancy and postpartum.

I see a lot of clients who are confused about what foods (if any) to cut out when breastfeeding, so maybe you'd like some info on this?

Whatever you want to know, pop it in the comments and I will get on it!
