Today is World Physiotherapy Day and this year’s theme is the role of physiotherapy and physical activity in healthy ageing, with a focused look at preventing frailty and falls.

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospital admissions for older Australians? Every year, almost 1 in 3 Australians aged 65 and over experiences a fall, which can lead to serious health complications and a loss of independence. 😔
The good news? Falls are preventable, and simple lifestyle modifications can go a long way in ensuring safety and confidence. Here are some effective tips to help reduce the risk of falls for yourself or your loved ones:

Improve home safety
• Remove loose rugs or clutter that may cause trips.
• Use brighter lighting to eliminate dark areas.

Engage in strength and balance exercises
• Regular exercise and activity can help improve muscle strength, balance, and coordination.

Use assistive devices
• Walking aids like canes or frames can offer added stability.
• Non-slip footwear provides better grip and reduces the chance of slips.

At Lifecare Homecare, we’re committed to helping older Australians stay active and independent by providing personalised physiotherapy care. Last week, the Australian Government announced a delay to the launch of the new Support at Home program, moving the start date from 1 July 2025 to 1 November 2025. This decision reflects sector feedback and aims to ensure a smoother transition for everyone involved.

At Lifecare Homecare, we welcome this extra time to prepare and fine-tune our processes. We’re committed to:
✅ Providing updates to our clients and stakeholders as changes unfold.
✅ Conducting staff training to support the new framework.
✅ Ensuring our clients fully understand how the changes will impact them.

For those currently receiving Home Care package funding there’s no action required at this time, but we encourage you to stay informed via the Support at Home program webpage. https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/support-at-home

Changes are on the horizon with the introduction of the Australian Government’s Support at Home program due in July this year. The program is set to revolutionise how we receive and fund home care services, merging Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), Home Care Packages (HCP), Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC), into one cohesive system.

One of the biggest changes will be the move to a more streamlined and needs-based approach to care funding. Under the new system, rather than being placed into rigid package levels (as with Home Care Packages), funding will be allocated based on a detailed assessment of individual needs.

Click below to learn more about how this could affect you, and what you can do to prepare.

And please feel free to reach out to the Lifecare Homecare team if you have any queries. https://www.lifecare.com.au/clinic/homecare/contact/

Starting 1 July 2025, the Support at Home Program is a landmark reform in aged care which will replace the Home Care Packages (HCP) and Short-Term Restorative
