We’d like to introduce Tristran, the Clinical Training Coordinator at Interchange WA.

You might have seen him before, because he’s recently been commended by his community and the Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook, for 20 years of service at the State Emergency Services.

Not only is he a hero who has played a critical role in saving lives and finding missing persons, he’s also a vital part of Interchange WA’s training process.

Tristran oversees the induction process for Support Workers, and runs training sessions for vital support skills such as PEG feeding and manual handling. He is part of the reason that our Support Workers are able to provide high-quality support to customers with a wide range of support needs.

We’re proud to call Tristran an Interchanger, so please join us in thanking him for his hard work.

Our SES volunteers do an incredible job for our community - day in, day out.

Whether they’re preparing for cyclones, rescuing people from floodwaters, or searching deep bushland for a missing person, SES volunteers are always ready to step up and help.

Their commitment to helping others is truly inspiring - like Tristran, who has dedicated 20 years to serving the Bassendean, Rockingham and Kwinana communities.

On Wear Orange Wednesday, on behalf of all Western Australians, I'd like to thank every SES volunteer across our State.

The work you do to keep our communities safe is truly remarkable.

Not everyone who supports People with Disability is on the front line.

Kate is a Quality Lead at Interchange WA and our latest iThink You Are Awesome winner. She works tirelessly in the background to make sure the people we support are safeguarded, and their incident reports are taken seriously.

Kate’s commitment to empowering People with Disability, and advocating for their choice and control is what makes her stand out, and we are proud to celebrate her work.

To read about what she does and why it’s so important, check the link in the comments.

This morning, Interchange WA had the pleasure to attend the Care Sector Showcase at South Metropolitan TAFE with our Diversity South team.

It was a great morning of getting out among the community and talking about what drives us to support People with Disability. We hope we’ve encouraged the next generation to consider joining the Care and Disability Sector as future career pathways, and maybe even join us at Interchange WA one day.

Do you know about “𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺”?

It’s a metaphor for managing chronic illness or disability’s connection to fatigue.

Spoons are a unit of measurement used to describe the energy that people with chronic illnesses and disability have to perform everyday tasks. It means that certain tasks take more energy for them than they might for other people, so they need to ration out their energy, so they’re not exhausted or put at risk.

This is especially important to People with Invisible Disability, whose needs can be misunderstood or unmet because they are not identified as needing support, time, or special accommodations.

In the time that Josh has been with Interchange WA, we’ve seen him transform.

When he began his supports, he was isolated, introverted, and working a job that didn’t fulfil him. Our Support Worker, Lee, saw his potential. With time, focus, and plenty of ups and downs, they made a plan to find fulfilling employment for Josh, then saw it through.

They started with Josh himself, looking at job options that suited both his interests and his process-oriented thinking. Once they found it, they broke it into steps. Even though it took time, his Support Worker aided him through every step of the way and motivated him through setbacks.

Getting his driver’s license was a major step that reignited his confidence. Then onto the qualifications of getting his traffic management certification and white card. The interview process was perhaps the most daunting stage, but his Support Worker attended as support. When Josh got the job, he couldn’t wipe the smile from his face.

His Support Worker took this photo once he started the job, showing off his certificate in his company vehicle and proud as can be.

Once an isolated introvert, Josh is now a team leader in his workplace. He does what he loves and has found a place in the world. We’re looking forward to what Josh does next, and we’re looking for more people to create successes with.

If you’re in the Midland area and looking for disability supports that help you reach your goals, contact our team at (08) 9329 9399 or email enquiry@interchangewa.org.au

And if you want to learn more about Josh’s success, a link to our blog is in the comments.

We’ve talked about Trevor and his incredible garden before, and we’re pleased to say it’s still growing strong. He’s put a lot of work into every stage of gardening. Soil preparation, shopping for and planting seedlings, and even using his own worm farm fertiliser. Now, his work and patience are paying off, and he’s harvested a massive crop of zucchinis, cucumbers, lettuce, capsicum, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots and herbs.

This photo was taken moments before Trevor went into his kitchen and started cooking with his homegrown veg. Just like he is proud to support his garden to flourish, Interchange WA is proud to support him to live a good life where he can reach his goals just like this one.

Here’s to the mothers living with disability.
Here’s to the mothers who are carers.
Here’s to the mother who care for someone just like their own as a support worker.
Here’s to the mothers in our community, making the world a better place for people with disability.
Here’s to all mothers for the work they put in, for the joy they bring, and for being themselves.

May all mothers have a wonderful Mother’s Day today and feel cherished every day.
