AWARENESS MONTH - ENDOMETRIOSIS

What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is present when the tissue that is similar to the lining of the uterus (womb) occurs outside this layer and causes pain and/or infertility. The lining layer is called the endometrium and this is the layer of tissue that is shed each month with menstruation (period) or where a pregnancy settles and grows.

This layer consists of two sublayers:
A base layer that is always present, this is where the new tissue regenerates following a period;
A surface layer that is shed with each period.

What problems does endometriosis cause?
Two types of problems can occur when endometriosis is present. These are:
1. Pain
2. Infertility (trouble becoming pregnant).

It is possible that you can have endometriosis and not have either of these problems. If endometriosis is present and it is not causing pain or problems with fertility, it does not need to be treated, though your doctor may recommend monitoring with clinical examinations (such as a pelvic examination when you have your routine Pap smear) or occasionally ultrasound and other tests if they are thought to be appropriate.

03/12/2018

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is an annual initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia running throughout the month of June (1-30 June), to raise awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer.

Bowel cancer claims the lives of over 80 Australians every week.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month has a positive message – saving lives through early detection – as bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer if found early.

From the city to the country, from the home to the workplace, individuals, families, health professionals, schools and businesses help to spread the word. Bowel Cancer Awareness Champions donate their time, services and creativity.

Many also kindly make monetary donations to help Bowel Cancer Australia with our work.

Without the support of all the wonderful individuals and organisations raising funds and awareness, Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and the work of Bowel Cancer Australia would not be possible.

So, to everyone who has in any way got involved with Bowel Cancer Awareness Month over the past years, please know that your support means a lot to us at Bowel Cancer Australia.

We're a relatively small team, so the more people joining the bowel movement with us, the better!

Bowel Cancer Australia is the leading community-funded charity dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and care for everyone affected by bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer).

Today is the day to support and say THANK YOU to NICU!

The birth of a premature or sick newborn is an overwhelming and traumatic experience for parents. “The NICU was an onslaught of flashing lights, alarming machines, indecipherable language and living minute by minute. Simply surviving the NICU and its inconceivable highs and lows required all the obtainable support to keep me standing” NICU Mum

The families of these miracle babies usually suffer extreme emotional distress and hardship. Their lives are changed permanently with their ability to cope significantly influenced by their NICU experience.

Recent research from Stanford University School of Medicine shows clearly that parents whose babies endured long stays in a NICU risk developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Four months after their NICU experiences, three of the 18 parents in the study had been diagnosed with PTSD and seven were considered high risk. Another study found that 16 weeks after childbirth mothers with access to experienced NICU parents had “less anxiety and depression and felt they had more social support.

Each year Cancer Council Australia and the Australasian College of Dermatologists come together for National Skin Cancer Action Week.

New research released by Cancer Council Australia has shown the message that there’s nothing healthy about a tan is still not reaching the majority of Aussie teens, with an alarming 62% saying their friends think a tan is a good thing.
The latest results from Cancer Council’s National Sun Protection Survey provide a snapshot of Australian teenagers' beliefs about tanning.

Overall, 38% of teens say they like to get a tan and girls proved to have a greater desire to tan, with 43% saying they prefer a tan. 67% of girls also believe their friends think a tan is a good thing.
Worryingly, while tanning preferences amongst teenagers have dropped since 2003, improvement in the preference for a suntan has stalled since the last survey in 2013.
More about the new research and statistics can be read here.

With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, the action week is an important reminder of the risks of exposure to UV radiation, the need for sun protection and early skin cancer detection for all Australians.
More than 2,000 people in Australia die from skin cancer each year, and Cancer Council estimates that Australia spends more than $1 billion per year treating skin cancer, with costs increasing substantially over the past few years.

Most skin cancers can be prevented by the use of good sun protection, yet too many Australians still have a tan.

Despite many Australians referring to a “heathy tan”, a tan is not a sign of good health or wellbeing. In fact, tanning is a sign that you have been exposed to enough UV radiation to damage your skin. This will eventually cause premature aging – including sun spots, wrinkles and sagging. Worst of all it increases your risk of skin cancer.
That’s why this National Skin Cancer Action Week and throughout summer Cancer Council is encouraging everyone to and embrace your natural skin tone. Make the pledge today to protect yourself from UV radiation and abstain from tanning.

During National Skin Cancer Action Week and throughout summer, whenever the UV index is three or above, use the five forms of sun protection and by:

slip on sun-protective clothing
slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen
slap on a broad-brimmed hat
seek shade
slide on sunglasses.
A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk.

NOVEMBER SPECIAL!

Travel Vaccine Advice consultation Bulk billed for all Medicare card holders. Terms and conditions apply! Speak to a receptionist today about our special.

As we come closer to the summer months, the doctors here at Northbridge medical centre strongly encourage all patients to book in ahead of any future travel plans to discuss any travel vaccines you may require for your destination.

We are a registered travel clinic and certified to provide the Yellow Fever Vaccination.

You may ask why it is important to vaccinate?
Vaccines provide protection by exposing the body to a small dose of the disease. This in turn strengthens your immune system as it develops immunity. By not vaccinating outs you at a greater risk of catching a preventable disease.
No matter where you are travelling to, it is strongly advised that your vaccinations are up to date. Some countries may even deny you entry unless you have the required vaccinations. Health risks vary from one country to another and there may be new outbreaks in certain areas.
We are open 6 days a week Monday through to Saturday with a range of doctors who have extraordinary care for their patients.

Bookings can be made through our website on

MONTH OF NOVEMBER AWARENESS!

Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in Australia.
It affects approx 3.5% of the population in their lifetime. In WA, at least 24,500 people have active Epilepsy with at least a further 1,400 new patients presenting with a seizure each year. It can affect anyone at any age, but many people experience their first seizure before the age of 20.

Once in 20 children will have a seizure at some time during their childhood/adolescence and one in 4 people with a disability, will also have epilepsy.

Epilepsy is increasingly common after the age of 50 years. The risk of an individual developing epilepsy in his or her lifetime is between 3 and 5 %

Causes of Epilepsy:
These include
- Genetics
- Low oxygen during birth
- Head injuries that occur during birth or from accidents during youth or adulthood.
- Infections such as meningitis or encephalitis
- Strokes
- Brain Tumours.

Treatment
Many people diagnosed with epilepsy can be effectively treated with seizure medication and lead relatively normal lives. Seizures can also be controlled to some extent, by adopting a careful and sensible approach to lifestyle.

Some people can even being seizure free within a few years under this regime. However, even with treatment, some people still have occasional breakthrough seizures, while others will continue to suffer uncontrolled seizures for the rest of their lives. Sometimes several hundred a day, which puts an enormous strain on the body and can make everyday life difficult for them and the people close to them.

FOOT HEALTH WEEK 15-21 OCTOBER!

The Australian Podiatry Association is the largest and oldest peak body representing podiatry and promoting foot health in Australia. As the leading provider of quality continuing education for podiatrists, we support our members with opportunities to develop their professional career, uphold standards and build connections.

We are committed to the advancement of podiatry to improve foot health in the community. The positive impact of podiatric care changes the lives of one in five Australians who suffer from foot pain.

Podiatry deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs. The conditions podiatrists treat include those resulting from bone and joint disorders such as arthritis and soft-tissue and muscular pathologies, as well as neurological and circulatory disease. Podiatrists are also able to diagnose and treat any complications of the above which affect the lower limb, including skin and nail disorders, corns, calluses and ingrown toenails. Foot injuries and infections gained through sport or other activities are also diagnosed and treated by podiatrists.

Clinical services require skilled use of sterilised instruments and appropriate infection control procedures, along with appropriate application of pharmacological agents, specialist wound dressings and a variety of physical therapies. Prescription foot orthoses (in-shoe devices) offer permanent solutions in the treatment and prevention of corns, callous and necrotic ulceration in their capacity to provide pressure redistribution. As a technique for providing consistent weightbearing realignment they are utilised in the treatment of acute and chronic foot conditions such as tendonitis, recurrent ankle sprain, chronic knee pain and stress fractures, to supplement and enhance clinical care.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY!!

Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated. In terms of the burden of the disease among adolescents, depression is the third leading cause. Su***de is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. Harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents is a major issue in many countries and can lead to risky behaviours such as unsafe s*x or dangerous driving. Eating disorders are also of concern.

Fortunately, there is a growing recognition of the importance of helping young people build mental resilience, from the earliest ages, in order to cope with the challenges of today’s world. Evidence is growing that promoting and protecting adolescent health brings benefits not just to adolescents’ health, both in the short- and the long-term, but also to economies and society, with healthy young adults able to make greater contributions to the workforce, their families and communities and society as a whole

08/10/2018

Australia has an appalling record when it comes to lower limb amputations resulting from type 2 diabetes. In fact we have the second highest rate of diabetic related amputations in the developed world. The latest figures indicate that more than 8,000 lower limb amputations are performed each year in Australia. (1)

Other causes for amputation include: cancer, vascular disease, trauma accidents, infection and birth deficiencies. In addition, some people will opt for an amputation as a result of on-going failed surgeries to gain a better functional and physical outcome.

Regardless of the cause of amputation, Limbs 4 Life believes that no individual should go through the trauma of limb loss alone. We believe that each individual (and their families) should have access to an organisation that understands their circumstances, can facilitate connections and provide up-to-date information.

Limbs 4 Life works to empower amputees with knowledge and support to make a real difference, because no-one should have to go through limb loss alone.

Help us to make a difference today!

Limbs 4 Life is the recognized that amputees needed an organisation that provided up-to-date information and formalized peer support.
