Back to school- "under the hood of wellbeing'- Carole Ryff’s 6-Factor Model of Psychological Wellbeing.

What an incredibly meaningful way for the Mandurah Baptist College staff to start their term break—focusing on collective and personal wellbeing across the whole school with a focussed well-being day!

The College’s commitment to its staff was evident throughout the whole day, starting with wonderful community engagement: supporting local groups, a beach clean-up, and even dancing with local seniors! Followed by a well-deserved lunch, staff had the opportunity to choose from a variety of sessions, from painting and meditation to my talk: "Under the Hood of Wellbeing."

We dove deep into Carole Ryff’s 6-Factor Model of Psychological Wellbeing, using both my clinical experience and lived experience examples to explore the core components that truly drive a long and healthy life. It was inspiring to see so many educators engage in such a reflective and powerful session.

A huge congratulations to MBC for their proactive and holistic approach to workplace care. As Term 4 kicks off—the busiest time of the year—we at Connections WA wish all the amazing teachers and staff a brilliant and successful start to term four.

Side note from me: To those who attended: I hope those journal books got a good workout over the holiday! What's one small commitment to your own wellbeing you're taking into Term 4?

A huge thank you to Tucker Christou from Gambling Counselling for his insightful presentation, “Problem Gambling," at our most recent Mental Health Professional Network event!

Tucker Christou is an accredited gambling counsellor with GamCare. His workshop shed a light on the significant challenges of gambling harm, and critically, how it is impacting people today.

This presentation introduced a person-centred therapeutic approach informed by cognitive-behavioural strategies, trauma awareness, and motivational interviewing. It outlined practical tools for engagement, relapse prevention, and the development of meaningful alternatives to gambling behaviour.

Participants attending gained:
* A deeper understanding of gambling as an emotional regulation strategy
* Insight into the cycles of addiction and uncertainty about change
* Therapeutic frameworks that support recovery and self-agency
* Strategies for addressing co-occurring mental health challenges

Thank you to everyone who joined us for another important and engaging session!

Where are you on this battery scale today? 🔋

It's so easy to push ourselves until we're in the red, but our minds and bodies thrive when we rest proactively. Let this be your gentle nudge to recognise the signs of needing a break when you're still in the 'take a break here' zone. What's one small thing you can do for yourself today to recharge?

Andrea Groom, our lead psychologist, is currently in Zurich, Switzerland, attending the XXII International Congress for Analytical Psychology. This year's congress is a landmark event, celebrating the 150th anniversary of C.G. Jung's birth.

With the busy lives we live, it's easy to feel drained. It's crucial to take time out and prioritise the things that support our mental health. It's about intentionally filling your cup with what truly nourishes your soul.

Here are some powerful ways to do just that:

Nourishment: Cook a balanced meal, make your favourite comforting drink, hydrate well.

Reflection: Check in with yourself, write in a journal, express gratitude.

Connection: Call a friend or family to check in and connect, join a local group that aligns with your interests.

Creative expression: Drawing, painting, playing music, writing poetry.

Movement: A walk, gentle stretching, yoga, dancing or any movement that suits you.

Rest: A 15-20 minute power nap, read a book, listen to a podcast, rest WITHOUT guilt.

Time in nature: Do some gardening, observe nature - trees, the ocean, clouds, animals, walk barefoot on grass or sand to connect with the earth.

Feeling overwhelmed? Your breath is a powerful tool to bring you back to the present. Let's practice the 4-4-4 Breathing Technique - aka Box Breathing - a simple method for quick calm and focus.

Here's how to do it:

1. Inhale deeply through your nose as you count slowly to 4. Imagine filling your lungs completely.

2. Hold that breath gently for a count of 4. Feel the stillness.

3. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth for a count of 4. Feel the tension releasing from your body.

4. Pause before your next inhale, for a count of 4. This creates a moment of peace.

Repeat this cycle 2 -3 times, or until you feel a mental shift. It's perfect for managing moments of anxiety, before a challenging task, or simply to find a moment of peace in your day.

Give it a try and discover the difference a few mindful breaths can make! 🧘‍♀️
