✨📝 Who said learning grammar can’t be fun!

Our Speech Pathologist Hannah recently used this magnet scene to teach coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in a hands-on and engaging way ⭐️

Activities like this help children to build longer and more complex sentences - turning a fun, play-based activity into powerful language learning 📝

💪🏼✨ Using PlayDoh to build strength and fine motor skills!

PlayDoh is one of our Occupational Therapists’ go-to tools - it is fun, versatile and can be used to support the development of a number of skills ⭐️

Activities such as rolling, pinching and squeezing PlayDoh helps with:
✋🏼 Strengthening the small muscles in the hands and fingers that are essential for writing, cutting, and self-care tasks (such as doing up buttons and zips)
🧠 Support bilateral coordination - by using both hands together in a coordinated way
👁️ Encouraging hand-eye coordination and precision
🌈 Building sensory awareness - PlayDoh provides rich tactile input, helping children explore different textures
🎨 Encouraging creativity and imagination - helping children express ideas and build confidence through play

A few minutes of PlayDoh play each day can make a big difference, helping little hands grow strong 💪🏼

🧠💬 Motor speech disorders such as Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) impact a child’s ability to plan and produce the precise movements needed for clear speech.

At Next Challenge, we have a number of Speech Pathologists who specialise in evidence-based interventions for motor speech disorders, including Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and Rapid Syllable Transition Training (ReST) 👄💬

Here’s a sneak peek into what a ReST session can look like at Next Challenge! 🌈

Our Speech Pathologists recognise it is important to keep therapy engaging and fun - so we use a number of tools including:
🧮 Abacus – to track practice trials
🧩 Puzzles – for motivation and short breaks
🗣️ Bjorem speech sound cards – provides visual cues to represent different speech sounds
📋 Visual Schedules – to build predictability and structure

⭐️🏆 Friendly competition meets therapy fun!

Two of our Speech Pathologists love Clack so much, they decided to go head to head to see who would be crowned the Clack champion! 👑 In the end… they both won! 🎉

Aside from being lots of fun, this game has been current favourite among our team, as it helps children in building:
✋ Fine motor skills
👀 Visual perception and pattern recognition skills
🧩 Problem solving skills
🎨 Understanding of colours and shapes

🧠🧩 Building skills with LEGO in speech therapy!

💬 “I love using LEGO in my speech therapy sessions—it’s such a motivating way to build communication skills while having fun!”

In a recent session, one of our Speech Pathologists used LEGO to support skill development in the following areas:
⭐️ Following directions: step-by-step building instructions
⭐️ Problem solving – fixing mistakes and working out what piece comes next
⭐️ Narrative skills – retelling how the LEGO was built with a beginning, problem, and resolution
⭐️ Vocabulary development – learning and using prepositions such as “next to”, “beside” and “on top”
⭐️ Social communication – turn taking, asking for pieces, and explaining ideas

It’s amazing how something as simple as a LEGO kit can become such a powerful therapy tool! 🌈

👋🏼 Today we celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages!

Sign languages are an important part of communication, identity, and inclusion across the world. They allow people to connect, learn, and engage with others in meaningful ways.

At Next Challenge, our team uses Key Word Sign in sessions to support understanding, connection, and communication for all learners. Key Word Sign combines speech with signs and gestures, helping to build vocabulary and confidence.

Let’s use today as a reminder to continue to promote accessibility, inclusion, and respect for every voice 💡🌏

Say hello to Build a Beetle - our September favourite at Next Challenge!

This game is super fun, and sneaks in loads of learning too! Swipe to see why our Speech Pathologist, Hiral, loves to use this game within her therapy sessions to target a number of different goals 🌈🗣️🧠

There are so many misconceptions about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) - and we love talking about them! AAC can feel a bit overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to have a lot of questions.

Let’s dive into some of the common worries families share and see what the research has to say! 💬✨

💭Misconception: AAC will keep my child from talking.
✅ Truth: AAC doesn’t hinder speech and may actually increase speech production! Research shows that 89% of individuals experienced increased speech, 11% experienced no change in speech, 0% experienced a decrease in speech when using AAC.

💭 Misconception: My child will only use AAC and give up on natural speech.
✅ Truth: We all use many different modes of communication (e.g. gestures, writing, texting/ email, speaking, etc.) Similarly, speech and AAC work together in a multimodal system, allowing children to choose the most effective way to express themselves.

💭 Misconception: AAC will make them "look different" from their peers.
✅ Truth: AAC helps support social communication skills and promotes social participation, enabling children to interact more effectively with their peers in social situations.

💭 Misconception: My child can already speak a little, so they don't need AAC.
✅ Truth: AAC can benefit those who can speak too. Sometimes speech doesn’t meet all communication needs, and AAC can provide the support they need to express their thoughts and ideas.
