There are so many misconceptions about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) - and we love talking about them! AAC can feel a bit overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to have a lot of questions.
Let’s dive into some of the common worries families share and see what the research has to say! 💬✨
💭Misconception: AAC will keep my child from talking.
✅ Truth: AAC doesn’t hinder speech and may actually increase speech production! Research shows that 89% of individuals experienced increased speech, 11% experienced no change in speech, 0% experienced a decrease in speech when using AAC.
💭 Misconception: My child will only use AAC and give up on natural speech.
✅ Truth: We all use many different modes of communication (e.g. gestures, writing, texting/ email, speaking, etc.) Similarly, speech and AAC work together in a multimodal system, allowing children to choose the most effective way to express themselves.
💭 Misconception: AAC will make them "look different" from their peers.
✅ Truth: AAC helps support social communication skills and promotes social participation, enabling children to interact more effectively with their peers in social situations.
💭 Misconception: My child can already speak a little, so they don't need AAC.
✅ Truth: AAC can benefit those who can speak too. Sometimes speech doesn’t meet all communication needs, and AAC can provide the support they need to express their thoughts and ideas.
