The UK are setting the standard for Pilates instructor requirements.. Instructors should have quality training.
Between 2019 and 2023 a wide range of Pilates teachers and brands collaborated to create the Pilates based matwork standard in the UK. The term Pilates based matwork came from the published paper following the survey of the global Pilates teaching community and refers to any group exercise class taught on a mat in the name of Pilates. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1360859219300762 This name also supports differentiation between mat instructors and Comprehensive Pilates teachers in that Pilates is a linked system of mat and apparatus most commonly taught 1-1 or small group. Individuals who seek the Pilates based mat qualification are usually new entrants to Pilates and seek work in gyms and leisure centres or community halls. Some open their own mat studios and work 1-1. There are many anomalies in what is described as "Pilates".
A consultation has been launched to review the standard and the link is below. In the future it may be that all fitness occupations in the UK become regulated and it is the content of this document that will underpin the Pilates Instructor role who offers Pilates based mat classes. The content also underpins the regulated qualification to become a Pilates Instructor who teaches Pilates based mat exercise. The Standard is now up for review. Please take your time to review the content of the standard and feedback to CIMSPA.
